Noticed: Alan Ilagan a Decade Ago

Noticed on Alan Ilagan:
This month marks the ten-year anniversary of the Letter-to-the-Editor in which I came out publicly as a gay man. It was printed in the hometown newspaper, and I’m putting it up here as a reminder to myself of how much has happened since that time, of how much I have changed, and of the things that have stayed the same.
Back then my parents were adamantly opposed to me putting such a letter in the local paper - fearing for my own safety and well-being, as well as their own reputations and image. When writing this letter, the only caveat I imposed on its publication was that I have my parents’ approval. It wasn’t something I did to hurt or embarrass them, and if they felt strongly enough about it then I’d accept that and leave it alone.
Obviously that’s not what happened. When I showed them the letter they were insistent that I not submit it to the newspaper. They said they knew I was “that way", and they were okay with it, but didn’t see the need for me to publicly put it out there. Crushed, I tried to explain how that was the whole point of the letter - no one had publicly put it out there for me to see when I was growing up, and my whole childhood was spent wondering where I fit in, where I belonged, and if there were others like me.

In Depth: Note for Rent
July 30, 2007 by admin · Leave a Comment
How old are you and what is your relationship status?
I am as old as my tongue, and a little older than my teeth.
My relationship status is free-for-all.
What kind of work do you do?
Um…. (Naked) creative consultant.
What are your hobbies?
I like to swim. I like to dance. I like to read.
Do you have any special skills?
Yes.
What turns you on? What is your "type"?
Big brains are hot, but my type can be re-interpreted according to the highest bidder.
Anything interesting about you that your readers wouldn't know?
Oh, yes.
Tell us about your blog :
Note For Rent is the result of being unable to talk to the majority of people I love about the way I've been living my life for the past year or so. Escorting provides a great deal of material to ruminate on, but not a great audience to converse with about all ofits ins-and-outs; and ins; and outs; so I started to write my thoughts down, along with some day-to-day stories, and the occasional sortie into my personal life (which blurs a bit into professional when you're sleeping with men for money).
The end result is what you read.
Who is it's intended audience?
Curious and dirty bastards, I should think.
How many daily visitors does it get?
About 250 people a day, when I'm writing it properly. Lately, I've been on hiatus.
If you could sum up your blog in one sentence, what would it be?
What the life of a call-boy costs.
If you had unlimited time, budget and staff, how would you change your blog?
I would re-invent it as a full-scale examination of sex and culture; but there would still be no pictures of naked men. I see enough on my own time.
How much time a week do you spend on your blog?
Hours and hours.
How many blogs do you read weekly? What are your favorites?
I read all the blogs listed on my site. I like them all.
Tell us about your future:
Each day starts after the stroke of midnight, from there, it's a mystery.
Give us some coming attractions on your blog:
It has a really good colour scheme. Also, I sometimes post pictures that set off my material.
What do you see different in your life two years from now?
I'll be retired.

How old are you and what is your relationship status?
I am 21 and currently taken.
What kind of work do you do?
I am studying Computer science at a small liberal arts college in Virginia. I hope to enter into the IT field when I graduate.
What are your hobbies?
I am a casual photographer. I would not go as far as to say that I am a pro, but I love to take pictures and capture memories. I also like the standard responses such as: hanging with friends, reading, partying, yadda yadda. I'm just your typical college student yet oh-so more.
Do you have any special skills?
I am probably the only person I know that can spit out more html coding without reference. I suppose that is considered nerdy skills. I am also quite proficient in Halo on XBOX live, but that doesn't help my reputation either unless anyone reading this loves video game nerds.
What turns you on? What is your "type"?
My type is a tall gentleman with a certain aura of confidence and sexiness. I like dark hair and light eyes. A sensitive heart and a rugged persona to handle my many quirks is what I love.
Anything interesting about you that your readers wouldn't know?
I am particularly shy when it comes to me voicing out my opinions in public. But, once I enter into the web arena, I become quite opinionated on matters such as politics and religion. I always respect anyone who beliefs different, for in America we are fortunate to believe whatever we wish.
Tell us about your blog :
Tell us about it's birth?
I have had a blog for years, but this is the first "adult" blog. In the past, I was childish mostly — clamoring about new video games and never writing anything deeper than what I did for the weekend. Granted, that is sometimes all I have to talk about on my current blog…but ya know.
I opened this blog in early february of this year.
