We’re # 1

July 19, 2008 by James

It’s often been said we live in the United States of Amnesia, and although I hate to admit it, it’s probably true. But sometimes, all we need is a little reminder of just how significant some events are. On top of that list are the heroes of the LGBT community. Here are some GLBT people who’ve been “firsts” within the political arena.

Sam Adams: First openly gay city council member in Portland, Oregon
Waheed Alli, Baron Alli: First openly gay peer in English Parliament
Andre Boisclair (Canada): First openly gay person in North America to lead a major political party
Bob Brown: First openly gay member of the Australian Parliament
David Cicilline: First openly gay mayor of an American state capital (Providence, RI)
Adam Ebbin: First openly gay Virgina delegate
Uzi Even (Israel): First openly gay member of Knesset
Margo Frasier: First openly lesbian sheriff elected to office (Travis County, TX)
Patria Jimenez: First openly lesbian member of the Congress of Mexico
Maggie McIntosh: First openly gay/lesbian member of the Maryland General Assembly
Kanako Otsuji: Japan’s first openly lesbian politician
