Newsome is revered by gay-marriage advocates who see him as a civil rights advocate. The San Francisco mayor started the public debate on the issue after 36 days as Mayor in 2003, when he granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The following year, the state Supreme Court annulled the unions. Gavin, if I may call him by his first name, is a Democrat, is expected to run for Governor of CA in 2010.
