Why Prop 8 Is Good For Gay Rights

On Tuesday, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, the voter initiative banning same-sex marriage in state.

Last November, LGBT activists knew the battle over the initiative would be one of great difficulty and divide, but few anticipated its success—the backlash of which left the 18,000 same-sex couples who were married prior to the ban unsure about the future of their partnerships and millions of other gays and lesbians in a state of bewilderment. California proved not to be the beacon of progressive social change it was thought to be.
