Broadway. The Tony Awards. Theater. What is it about American Theater that makes one sentimental and believe in the beauty of human ability? The musical theater in particular is something of an aberration: it is not real. People do not sing on rooftops, or form peculiar tribes that sing adoration of their hair. But that is just the ticket that makes musical theater so special: we wish it were so. We are reminded of the Oscars, the film industries tribute to their own special management of reality.
