Never Shied from Controversy

Impregnated by her father, beaten daily by her mother and ridiculed by passersby as a result of her generous girth, Precious (played by overnight sensation and open casting call hire, Gabby Sidibe) is not your average screen heroine.

She’s Black. She’s big. She doesn’t crack jokes or say “Hell no!” She’s not even played by a man in drag.

“I know she’s so different, and that’s what I loved about her. You don’t see people like her on screen, and I think that was one of the reasons why I was so committed to making the movie,” says Daniels.

“It might have even been an act of, shall we say, subversion.”

Daniels smiles again with wide eyes as he sits back near a crackling fire in a wood-panelled Vancouver bar. As the producer of The Woodsman, a movie that featured Kevin Bacon as a sympathetic pedophile, and Monster’s Ball, the movie that propelled Halle Berry to the Oscar dais and Sean Combs to stagecraft, Daniels knows a thing or two about cutting a swath straight through the establishment with an uncompromising vision.
