A Single Man

I went to see John Ford’s ‘A Single Man‘ and give it as many stars as I possible can. The performances by the cast (especially Julianne Moore) were stellar to say the least. The cinematography was incredible, the set designs were incredible…the movie, was incredible.
Set in the early 1960′s in Sacramento, California, the story unfolds of a man struggling with the loss of his lover of 16 years. The film does a great job of is demonstrating what homophobia really is…fear of the unknown, and it does a great job of comparing homophobia to the hate many other minorities have experienced. It also very eloquently points out that hatred towards a non-visible minority (i.e. Jews or gay people) can sometimes be more difficult to deal with than the blatant hate spewed towards visible minorities, without in anyway taking away from the atrocity of discrimination on any level. It also clearly demonstrates that how many people, whether in the 60′s or present, don’t value same-sex relationships as “equal” to heterosexual relationships.
It also is a great reminder to all viewers of how important it is to live in the present. Don’t get stuck in the past…you can’t change it. Don’t worry about the future, you don’t know what it holds.
Regardless of gender, age or sexual orientation, ‘A Single Man’ is a must see for anyone who has ever dealt, or will deal with loss…in other words…don’t miss it!
