But researchers think they may have found a way to wake those cells up, which could allow antiviral HIV meds kill them.

According to AIDSmeds.com:

A new clinical trial has just gotten underway to test the ability of Antabuse (disulfiram)—a drug used for years to treat alcoholism—to flush out the hidden reservoir of HIV that evades both the immune system and antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. Though the trial will be small and isn’t seeking to cure the study participants, it could help propel HIV cure research forward.

When it comes to addressing HIV and AIDS among gay men, there are a host of policy positions that need to be changed to create equality for gay men and men who have sex with men of all races . For example, we need to have comprehensive sexual health and awareness education which includes HIV prevention and treatment education both for students and those not currently in school HIV prevention education that teaches about safer sex for everyone — gay, straight and everything in-between– in an open and accurate way. And there’s no way for us to have an effective National AIDS Strategy without acknowledging that all levels of government must do all that they can to end discrimination on the basis of who we have sex with.

DC Activist Brian Watson hasn’t slept much lately. He has been busy preparing for the opening of The Wanda Alston House, a groundbreaking housing program for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) youth in Washington, DC. It is the first transitional living program dedicated to preparing GLBT youth for independent living and adulthood in the District of Columbia. Wanda Alston was a prominent leader in the GLBT community and was the first appointee to direct the Mayor’s Office of GLBT Affairs. According to Brian,”The Wanda Alston House is for these youths, to be able to have a home to go to that’s safe from hurt, harm and danger, where people don’t judge them and where they can develop into successful adults. It’s an environment where they don’t have to worry about surviving. A lot of GLBT youth turn to suicide or substance abuse, or even to prostitution as a way to survive. A lot of it has to do with the fact that they have nowhere to go. The housing program is trying to help those youths by providing a safe place to go.
