By now it’s almost certain that you’ve heard about the controversy over the trailer for Universal’s new movie “Dilemma” starring Vince Vaughn over Vaughn calling electric cars “gay”.

But even though Universal has yanked the trailer, the studio isn’t the only one catching flack over this “dilemma” as some gay activist are accusing “GLAAD” of not stepping up to the plate fast enough on the issue.

According to a post on ABC.com:

“It just seems they are always giving the benefit of the doubt to the studios and the networks,” gay author and radio host Michelangelo Signorile said. “Because they think they can get more done working on the inside and because they also give awards to the same entities and have benefits at which they all have to buy tables. There’s an appearance of conflict of interest, which is troubling.”

CNN’s Anderson Cooper first opened up this story with his opinion on the lovely Ellen Degeneres’ chat show, this week, about a line in a movie trailer that used the term ‘so gay’ in a derogatory context. The CNN silver fox, Cooper was on the Ellen show discussing bullying when he voiced his concern, telling Degeneres he was ‘shocked’ by the gay line in the trailer, “I just find those words, those terms – we’ve got to do something to make those words unacceptable ’cause those words are hurting kids,” He said and I cheered. The line he’s talking about is, I believe “Electric cars are gay. I mean not homosexual gay, but, you know, my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay.”

Come on, we’ve all heard things like that, things such as “Oh that’s so gay” meaning something’s bad and not in a good way, or something’s broken “It wont work, it’s being gay” or some variation like that with the same derogatory sentiment, and we’ve heard it for so long now, it’s about time someone took a stand.

In the UK there was a mini up-roar when breakfast radio presenter Chris Moyles used the term on air to describe a bad mobile phone ring tone. There were complaints to the BBC and in the media, but nothing was done, the BBC backed their star saying he was just getting down with the audience, using terms readily used in school playgrounds up and down the country. This was back in 2006 and whilst it was unpalatable then, it is so in this day an age. Just because something is widely used, does not make it good or acceptable.

However, here, where Anderson Cooper and Ellen led, GLAAD followed! They issued a press statement telling how they had addressed the issue with Universal Pictures, the makers of the film. “Regardless of the intention, hearing words like ‘gay’, ‘fag’, and ‘dyke’ consistently used as insults is a hard thing for LGBT people to take, particularly for LGBT youth who must endure such language daily at school. As recent events have shown, the consequences can be devastating.”

Now, Universal Pictures has conceded that the reference to Smart cars being ‘gay’ in it’s trailer for The Dilemma may not quite have been a smart idea after all, they’ve pulled it from the trailer, and all mention of it removed from it’s publicity.

A victory for commonsense, for equality, for what’s right.

I think it’s safe to say that many of us queers have some love for Anderson Cooper. Sure, he has continuously let us gays down for his choice of not coming out about his sexuality, but it’s that mystique that makes him even more sexy.

You can watch him each night on 360 and lately each Friday with Kelly Ripa on Live with Regis & Kelly. While covering the news, he keeps it real and honest. While dishing in host chat, he’s funny and charming.

He gets a lot of flack for not coming out, but I think I’ve found a way for him to make up for it.

Perez was last seen pulling anchor duty on July 22, but his descent began months ago, according to a discrimination claim filed with Miami-Dade’s Equal Opportunity Board, alleging WPLG bosses ousted him “because of their discomfort over the increasingly high profile of my sexual orientation.”

He was still a hot piece back in the day, but in the second picture below he’s kind of looking a little Vermont lesbian-ish. I’d still hit it.
