Wednesday night US President Barack Obama gave the 221st State Of The Union speech live to America, it was also carried by rolling news channels all over Europe and beyond.

Being at least 5 hours ahead of US Eastern time, it was the middle of the night for us British folk, but, it was worth staying up for.

Obama has always been a great orator, a true man of words, and last night was no exception. His address was exciting, information, reassuring, it was also inspiring, moving and appeared beyond much doubt, heartfelt.

As an outsider, looking in on the world of American politics, I feel nothing but admiration for Obama and his regime. He’s already gone further in one year than most politicians do in four, and without doubt, raised if not the world’s, then certainly Europe’s opinion of America. Which, can honestly only be a good thing. His address touched on many subjects, however, it’s just one line that springs to mind, that could, would, and hopefully will change the lives of many people, desperate to show the country they love what they can do. That line was “This year I will work with congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are”

It’s just one line, but it’s been a long time coming, 17 years in fact, yep, if my memory is right it’s been 17 years since Bill Clinton, another democrat, first promised to lift the ban on gays serving in the military. Of course, that didn’t happen, congress saw to that and the rather silly compromise of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was introduced. Which as an outsider, seem pretty odd, discriminative and absurd. To me it basically said, it’s OK to be gay and in the military as long as you don’t tell anyone, don’t have feelings for anyone, don’t fall in love with anyone, don’t have a personal life, don’t even breathe in a pink way, but do lie, do be dishonest, do live with the constant danger of being outed, of saying or doing the wrong thing.

In the UK, openly gay men and women have been allowed to serve in the armed forces since the start of the decade and since 2008 have been allowed to attend gay pride events and marches in uniform. Indeed, there are even army, navy and air force recruiters at some pride events up and down the country! There are at least 30 other countries that don’t have any bans on gays serving in the forces, including Spain, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Whilst the list for those countries that don’t allow gays in the military is much smaller, at last count, 17 I think, including the USA!

In 2008, 100 retired generals and admirals urged the US congress to over turn Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, it’s estimated there are some 65,000 gays already serving in the forces and also 600 people each year are discharged for coming out and revealing their sexuality. So, yes, it may only be one line in his first State Of The Union speech, but it’s going to have far reaching implications for a great many people, a change for the better is coming! It’s been a long time coming!

Jason Shaw, Brighton, England.

Elliott, he’s a fan! “Jason Shaw – writes my socks off!”

I am not exactly sure what America’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community expected to get out of this past year. But whatever it was, they didn’t get it.

I know this because a great number of my peers in this community are being terrifically loud about how upset, disrespected and betrayed they feel by the man who actively courted us from the beginning of his campaign nearly three years ago, President Barack Obama.

It’s important to note Obama didn’t conduct an especially effective courtship for most of that time.

To the extent that anyone can infer from evidence that is mostly anecdotal, the LGBT community supported his rival would-be nominee, Hillary Clinton, in numbers that were probably overwhelming, right up until the moment Clinton conceded at the Denver convention.

Once the nomination was official, though, our demographic dutifully moved its support, more or less monolithically, behind the man who promised to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” but held on to public opposition to gay marriage (and, for what little it is worth now, Clinton maintained the same position).

There were good signs early on. Obama spoke to us; he acknowledged us; he recognized our existence and our general right to exist.

(Of course, he also recognized our increasing skill for organization and growing economic power. He would have been foolish not to.)

He did better than threaten to merely “tolerate” us, as Sarah Palin did in her debate with Joe Biden; he promised that our fight would be his fight.

We believed him. We had to – what alternative did the opposition represent?

So we were as elated as anyone on Inauguration Day last year. I traveled to Washington, D.C. for the event and wrote about it in this space.

But I am a lifelong student of politics, and thus I am a realist, and I am skilled at the tempering of expectations.

I said the following, not in reference to prospects for LGBT citizens under Obama, but merely in reference to his coming presidency in general:

“Everyone accepts that over the course of the new administration, no one is going to get precisely his or her way. The nature of all things in government is compromise.

I am fine with that … I just want competence. Though we may each find ourselves disappointed in the direction of this policy or that, I believe we will at least find competence rather than indolence.”

That’s not asking much.

But the expectations of my LGBT peers were apparently much more demanding.

A year later, they haven’t gotten precisely their way, and many of them are furious.

To this, I have two responses.

Find out what they are at: The Daily Athenaeum!

The Religious Right is going nuttier over transgender Obama appointee Amanda Simpson! Amanda Simpson, who was named by President Obama to be senior technical adviser for the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, has worked in the field for over 30 years. But prominent figures on the religious right are claiming that she was picked only as part of some transsexual agenda.

“Is there going to be a transgender quota now in the Obama administration?” asked Peter LaBarbera, president of the anti-gay group Americans for Truth. “How far does this politics of gay and transgender activism go? Clearly this is an administration that is pandering to the gay lobby.”

“Simpson’s nomination was forwarded through to President Obama by a gay activist group, making it appear that this appointment of a male-to-female ‘transgender’ activist to a high level Commerce Department position to be payback to his far-left base for their political support,” a spokeswoman for Focus on the Family said in statement.

Matt Barber, associate dean at Jerry Fallwell’s Liberty University, said the appointment “boggles the mind” and said that while African-Americans might deserve special treatment, transgender people don’t.

“This isn’t like appointing an African-American in order to try to provide diversity and right some kind of discriminatory wrong,” he said. “This is about political correctness.”

The election of lesbian Annise Parker as mayor of Houston, similar to the election last year of African-American Barack Obama as president, was another mature moment of Americans judging individual people of color and homosexuals by the content of their politics. Not yet answered is whether America is ready to let such figures use their office to remediate the economic and education disparities and the civil rights gaps that still bedevil people of color and gay and lesbian people in general.

America is getting better at the individual level. The question is when will that translate into critical progress for the groups Parker and Obama come from.

Start with Parker. Houston became the largest yet in the United States to elect an openly gay mayor. Her sexual orientation meant less than her six prior citywide election victories for either city council or controller. The Houston Chronicle called her a grassroots “policy wonk’’ who “happened to be gay.’’

“When I heard him speak about a gay person never having to sit outside the hospital room with their loved one sick inside, I burst into tears because so many people I care about are homosexual and it was profound to have someone be sensitive to that,” she said.

“That’s the kind of world I want to live in, where we’re not holding our own principles in judgement above someone or against someone.”

While supportive of most gay rights, Senator Obama does not support gay marriage.

“I support the notion that all people — gay or straight — deserve the same rights and responsibilities to assist their loved ones in times of emergency, deserve equal health insurance and other employment benefits currently extended to heterosexual married couples, and deserve the same property rights as anyone else,” he wrote in a response to questions put to him by the gay press.

The Bush tax cuts give those who earn over $1 million dollars a tax cut nearly 160 times greater than that received by middle-income Americans. Obama will cut income taxes by $1,000 for working families, and eliminate income taxes for seniors who make less than $50,000 per year.
