Looking Good for the GOP

Things were looking good for Miss California. But then things began to go wrong. I’m talking The Stepford Wives meets Westworld wrong. She began skipping scheduled pageant events, which she was contractually obligated to attend. She began attending anti-gay marriage events, which she was contractually obligated to avoid. She was accused of sending hostile e-mails, hindering normal business activity and an “inability to work in a civil and mutually beneficial manner.” In other words, Prejean took a page from Sarah Palin’s upcoming memoir and went rogue. However, Prejean claims that it was her religious beliefs, not her inability to do her job, which led to her eventual firing. As such, she filed a lawsuit against the pageant for “libel, slander and religious discrimination.” The pageant, in a classy retaliation, countersued Prejean for the cost of her breast augmentation surgery. The legal battle raged for a couple months until last week, when Prejean mysteriously and abruptly settled out of court as news leaked onto the internet of a “sex tape,” which she admits to starring in, following closely on the heels of a string of semi-nude photos. On Wednesday night, when CNN’s Larry King asked her why she agreed to the settlement if she really felt she’d been fired for her religious beliefs — as opposed to incompetence — she pulled the plug on her mic and threatened to walk off the show in the middle of the segment. It was reminiscent of how Palin pulled the plug on her governorship and walked away from her Alaskan constituents in the middle of her term. As for the exploitative images and “sex-tape,” rather than blaming a sleazy photographer and an even sleazier ex-boyfriend for violating her trust, Prejean has insisted that she is the victim of a sinister conspiracy to humiliate her perpetrated by the “liberal media.” “There is a campaign against me trying to silence me,” she proclaimed on the Today Show. “… Since when does freedom of speech not exist? Since when is someone [such as Keith Olbermann] able to go on national TV and call someone the most awful names you can call a woman and get away with it?” To answer the second question first: Since freedom of speech was enshrined in the Constitution. And to address the implication behind the first question: No one has said that freedom of speech does not exist or tried to punish Prejean for exercising this right. She also exercised her freedom to enter into a popularity contest, said something unpopular, and got dumped. End of story. Yet some Republicans are convinced there is a liberal plot to revoke civil liberties and destroy America as they know it.

Celebrity “Sex Tape” Justice

Carrie Prejean demanded more than a million dollars during her settlement negotiations with Miss California USA Pageant officials — that is, until the lawyer for the Pageant showed Carrie an XXX home video of her handiwork.

The video the lawyer showed Carrie is extremely graphic and has never been released publicly. We know that, because TMZ obtained the video months ago but decided not to post it because it was so racy. Let’s just say, Carrie has a promising solo career.

We’re told it took about 15 seconds for Carrie to jettison her demand and essentially walk away with nothing. As we first reported, the Pageant is paying around $100,000 to her lawyers and publicist — a fraction of her bills. She pockets nothing in the settlement.

A Lie You Couldn’t Believe If You Were on Acid

Apparently Kathryn Jean Lopez, editor of National Review Online, has published a piece that credits beauty queen and former Miss California Carrie Prejean for “saving traditional marriage” and holding back the push for marriage equality.

I kid you not. Of course how Lopez accomplishes this is an old trick that I have seen the religious right do – take several unrelated incidents and link them together. The credibility of these claims generally depend on the emotions of the audience they are writing to.

Lopez is obviously a master of this because according to her after Prejean made her now infamous statement and had her brush up with gossip columnist Perez Hilton, the momentum started to shift against marriage equality.

Book Deal for Miss Opposite Marriage

The fallen Miss California Carrie Prejean has signed up with right-wing publisher Regnery to write, um, speak into a recorder for a ghost writer.

Media Matters:

Disgraced Miss California USA Carrie Prejean has landed herself a book deal with Regnery Publishing, the notorious right-wing publishing house.

I’m sure Prejean, the darling de jour among Christian conservatives and the right-wing press, will feel right at home with Regnery. After all, Regnery is a major hub in the right-wing noise machine that’s been whitewashing her stance on “opposite marriage” for months.

Prejean: Lambert Should Have Won

Cameras caught up with the still-reigning Miss California as she left Fox News’ studios on Wednesday morning.

The cameraman asked the gay marriage opponent what she thought of the believed-to-be-gay ‘American Idol’ runner-up Adam Lambert.

‘I loved Adam! He should have won… My question onstage was about gay marriage and I spoke my mind.’

Prejean’s Mother’s Lesbian Affiar

Star is reporting that Francine Coppola, Prejean’s mother, was allegedly sleeping with a woman up until the night of the Miss USA competition.

“Yes, Francine [Coppola] and I dated,” Valerie Vetrano, an openly-gay woman, told Star.

I had heard rumblings of Miss California Carrie Prejean’s parents slinging mud at each other during their messy divorce – including accusing each other of being gay – but the story has grown much more interesting.

Perez/Prejean Debate Continues

Twenty years ago, I watched an interview with Anita Bryant on Larry King where she claimed that the gay community had destroyed her career. “The very same thing they accuse me of doing to them, they did to me,” she said in a paraphrased burst of self-pity. It was apparently lost on her that she brought it on herself, that people will fight back and that her suffering was mild compared to the injury she inflicted on countless people who were already objects of hatred.

Perez Hilton (who I’d never heard of before this ridiculous beauty queen flap) strikes me as something of a jerk and a very bad “face” for gay marriage equality. But come on – the insults that Prejean has had to endure are mild compared to the vicious and hateful invective I’ve been subjected to for being gay my entire life. Hell, I get attacked and insulted more in five minutes on a chat room for being gay than Prejean has had to suffer since this entire affair began.

Homophobia Runs in the Family

A second racy lingerie photo has emerged of Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean – as well as some details about her past that may shed some light on the beauty queen’s well-publicized views against gay marriage.

Prejean’s publicist says Prejean posed for the photos when she was 17 in order to land a modeling job. Prejean herself defended the first image, saying, “I am a Christian, and I am a model … Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos.”

Prejean, whose anti-gay marriage comments during the Miss USA pageant thrust her into the national spotlight, may also have some explaining to do about a series of court documents from her parents’ messy, decade-long divorce proceedings.

The papers, dug up by TMZ.com, show that Prejean’s parents flung a series of homosexual allegations against one another.

In one of the documents, Prejean’s father describes a confrontation he had with her mother in 1996, in which “Ms. Prejean accused me, in front of our daughter, of homosexuality.”

Another excerpt quotes a court-appointed doctor who said “The mother questioned [within hearing of the girls] whether [her father] was a homosexual or had a homosexual roommate.”

Britney, Miley & Heidi Tweet

Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears have taken to Twitter to support gay marriage, just days after Miss California Carrie Prejean sparked controversy during Sunday night’s Miss USA competition when asked by celeb blogger Perez Hilton if more states should legalize same-sex marriage.

Prejean stated her opinion that marriage should be between a man and a woman — and in the process has made an enemy of Hilton — but has also started a conversation among many notable celebrities on Twitter.

“Love is love!” Britney Tweeted to Perez. “People should be able to do whatever makes them happy!”
