We’d heard of some unauthorized twaddle going around focusing on the gay undercurrent of the Summer Olympics, but as far as we’re concerned, NBC is doing some of most trailblazing work this year by playing out Beijing’s homoerotic currency right in the mainstream. Nowhere is it more evident than the network’s Olympics Web site, where after a sleek, soaking stretch of Water Cube drama, a new slideshow today invites readers to guess the rippling abs whose owners made it through the historic week that was. Some are more challenging than others, but not knowing which Australian “recently dropped backstroke to focus on butterfly” or which American “has dominated his best stroke since 2001″ (hint: not Michael Phelps!) hardly seems to detract from the guessing-game fun.

Gay? Star Takes Test!

Some readers will take this story seriously. Some will get the giggles. Let’s get that settled now by countering some of the nonsense I’ve already encountered writing this piece. I’m not gay. I’m not gay because I write about Torchwood. Not all Torchwood stars are inherently gay. Not all Torchwood fans are reviewers are inherently gay. No, there’s no test to see if you’re gay. The tests mentioned in the headline are not, in and of themselves, “gay.” And, finally, the gay star mentioned herein did not undergo tests to see if he could be cured. Are we finished? Good. Go lay down. The adults have work to do. As part of the new BBC1 series, The Making of Me, John Barrowman (pictured with holster, as Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who and Torchwood) recently underwent tests to determine if his sexual preferences developed biologically, as part of his upbringing or via his environment.
