Jason Shaw, top blogger from The Seafront Diaries and gayagenda.com‘s UK correspondent managed to secure an exclusive interview with one of the most elusive New York based singer song-writers around at the moment, the highly talented Jay Brannan!

Here, especially for you, the BestGayBlogs.com readers and friends is that special exclusive interview:

Little mermaid on crack, voice of a fallen angel, a modern day twisted torch song singer, the sound of a sad angry woman, all various phrases that have been used to describe the talent that is New York based 28 year old actor, singer, song-writer Jay Brannan. Yet, all of them don’t quite hit the mark, for there is far more to the swoonsome singer than his pretty face, hauntingly beautiful voice and meaningful heartfelt lyrics!.

It’s fair to say this enigmatic boy first rose to the great public awareness when he appeared in the raunchy, provocative, John Cameron Mitchell move ‘Shotbus’ in 2006. A movie so full of erotic and and in your face sex than sadly a great many people didn’t see past that and see the masterpiece it truly is. It “was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever been a part of” Jay tells me, “Being in a movie and having a song on the sound-track, expanded my audience very quickly, on a small, but global scale” He says with fondness, the song he speaks of is the quirky, twinkly and jolly ‘Soda shop’ and that audience, is truly global – fans from as far apart as New Zealand and Iceland. And, it’s an audience that’s steadily growing, over 23,000 fans on Facebook, 37,800 odd on MySpace, a further 14,500 follow his every word on micro-blogging tweeteriffic Twitter and almost an amazing 6,890,000 plays on YouTube.

Those numbers are only likely to get bigger as this talented handsome young man packs up his trusty guitar and hits the road, touring both in North America and Europe. Full list of dates and venues can be found below, but, you’d better act fast, tickets sold out fast last time, leaving a surprisingly large number disappointed and unable to enjoy his emotive far reaching soul pleasing sound.

I caught up with Jay last week, after months and months of trying to gain an interview with the shy entertainer. First of all, I know you usually shy away from doing such interviews, claiming you’re not that interesting, so really Jay, I think you for agreeing to do this one.

Haha, Jason, I don’t ever remember agreeing to do an interview………

Let’s talk about your tour, you are just about to embark on a long list of live dates, what made you decide to tour now?

“Err, isn’t that what musicians do?”

Well, yep, good point, it is what musicians do, although in the commercial pop world it’s all lip syncing and coat hanger smiles! What do you enjoy more, is it the live shows or perhaps the recording or the writing?

“Live shows. Writing and recording are frustrating”

So, for you, what’s the best thing about live shows?

“I just like singing! But it’s cool that I show up in places I’ve never been sometimes, and there’s a room full of people there who came to see me sing! And sometimes they sing along, or request songs by name…that’s always a little surreal.”

Which song is most requested?

“Ummm…I’m not sure. I’m always surprised by which song of mine people tell me they like the best. It’s often not what I would expect.”

So far, Jay’s tour includes a few dates in England and Ireland this autumn, I ask if he’s excited to be coming back this way over the Atlantic.

“Oh of course! I’m very lucky to have the opportunity to tour international. it’s not easy!”

He’s no stranger to Europe, earlier this year he spent a few months travelling around, mostly mainland Europe, even giving a few impromptu open air concerts in city centre parks, much to the delight of the local fans. He’s enthusiastic in his reply to my rather weak and cliche question ‘how was it for you’?’

“It was an amazing experience. Parts of it were awesome, parts of it were horrible. But ultimately I learned so much about myself, and got to see some new parts of the world.”

“For someone as inactive and low energy as me, 3 months abroad is a big challenge hahaha. I grew a lot I think.”

I knew when I was in America for three months, there were certain quintessential ‘English’ things I missed, and I wondered if there was anything you missed most while you were travelling?

“American clothes dryers!!”

No interview with Jay would be complete if we didn’t touch on the movie ‘Shortbus’ whist it may not have achieved the audience it should have, it remains one of my favourite and a rapidly becoming a cult classic. I asked Jay, who played a rather shy and giggly Ceth, if it was an enjoyable experience.

“Yup…….one of the most amazing things I’ve ever been a part of. I was very lucky to be involved in that project and to get to know such incredible people. It was soooo much fun, and meaningful at the same time”

Because of the publicity surrounding it’s original release, as one of the most erotic and explicit movies ever released, I wondered if it had helped or hindered his musical career, and you can tell by his words, he’s brimming with pride about the movie.

“I owe a lot of my “career” to that film. Being in a movie and having a song on the sound-track, expanded my audience very quickly. On a small, but global scale”

“It’s brought me lots of opportunity”

Changing the subject a little and focusing on the music, your songs are so authentic and meaningful, where do you draw your inspiration from?

“My life ! Mostly pain, frustration, fear, anger. Those are the things that drive me to write.

“It’s like my coping mechanism for life. Or like having a tumour in my brain that has to be drained every now and then, or my head will pop. Haha, that’s kind of gross, isn’t it?”

It is kinda gross, but also the perfect analogy for having to get something out, out of your head, to let it flow free, to share it with the world. What comes first, is it the lyrics, or the tune, or does it just flood your mind in one big lump?

“I suck at playing guitar, so I have to write something on guitar first, cuz I cant write a guitar part to match something I’ve already written, after that I hum a tune and start piecing together the melody and the words”

You make it sound easy, do you find it easy to write?

No!! it never comes easy to me. Agonising, even yes……”

I’ve always thought your songs have a deep, meaningful, authentic quality to them, how easy is it for you to be so honest when writing?

“Being honest is one of the few things I’m really good at! Haha that’s not difficult at all”

And, which one of your honest songs are you most proud?

“That depends on the day. Shockingly, I am proud of lots of them. Three years ago I would have told you I thought they were all horrible haha. But the response from other people has allowed me to believe maybe they’re not so bad”

His slightly self effacing personality is all part of the charm and beauty that makes this singer so attractive to his audience, who are a pretty loyal bunch. What’s the best thing about being Jay Brannan I ask, not really expecting a specific answer, but gratitude was the last thing on my mind.

“Haha I don’t know, I’ve been lucky to make a living from music for the past 2 years, and I’ve gotten to travel around the world more than once. I am very grateful for those things”

What’s the worst thing about being Jay Brannan then?

“Probably the emotional & social dysfunction parts haha”

Talking of emotions, are you still single, or has love entered your life? Are you anywhere nearer to becoming that housewife making guacamole?

“I haven’t dated anyone in 8 years!!!”

I wasn’t anticipating such a long absence of date-able men, I’d have thought potential suitors would be lining up round the block for this handsome eligible bachelor, god knows if I’d been a couple of years younger, I’d have been one of them! But, what kind of guys does Jay go for?

“Ummm someone who makes me laugh and who likes me exactly the way i am”

Maybe, he’ll walk in to one of your shows, although I’m quite sure a flutter from those long eyelashes and searching eyes would have quite a few hearts fluttering in the audience you might have to fight ‘em off with a stick. But, apart from this the tour, coming over to Europe, what other plans have you got?

“Trying to figure out how to record my next album, and writing the songs for it. I’d also like to do more acting.”

Our brief time is running out and I wonder if he’d like to leave us with a little bit of Jay Brannan wisdom?

“ummmm…follow your instincts and never let other people tell you who can or cant be, and what you can or cant do with your own life?”

Now, as any of my regular readers will know, I also end an interview with a request for a secret, for example, Jayden Grey told me he secretly likes chic-flicks, Joanna Lumley said she secretly liked chilling out with no make-up and jogging bottoms on and Christopher Dallman confessed that Lindsay Lohan thought he was hot – So Jay, tell us a secret.

“Oh My God! how weird, Lindsay Lohan thought *I* was hot, too!!”

Thanks for the interview Jay, just like I promised, it wasn’t too probing! (we’ll save that for next time!)

Jay’s tour details as follows –

He’s the new boy on the block, the fresh face in the crowd, the new hot twink of BoyCrush & Helix, Today, our very own Jason Shaw, from The Seafront Diaries, talks to Hayden Chandler. Hayden is the new twink porn sensation, that some are already calling a Twink Legend In The Making.

Hi Hayden, first of all thanks for sitting down with me for this interview, what are you up to?
Hiii! No problem!! Right now I’m feeding my addiction for Twitter! Haha I told myself that I would NEVER use twitter, but look at me now I’m a tweetaholic!! I always love to have new followers!

OK, it’s not long since you’ve come back from Phoenix, and your gay Pride event? Phoenix Pride was GREAT!! It sure was a memorable first pride, not only going to but being apart of it was so awesome!! I saw a lot of people I haven’t seen since my last visit to Phoenix and I met some great new people as well!! I had the pleasure of meeting Patrick Kennedy and Jason Pitt while down there which was really cool. Overall it was definitely a great time!!

Now, you’re young, you’re only 18, and already making inroads into the world of adult entertainment and getting more and more popular?
I know!! Crazy isn’t it? I am very thankful for where I am right now. I can only hope to go further!! I thank all of my supporters and fans for that!

How many scenes have you shot?
So far I have done 8 scenes. 5 for BoyCrush and 3 for Helix. 5 of them being hardcore scenes. Be sure to check em out!!What made you get into this porn business in the first place?
Ive been interested in porn for as long as I can remember. It was always a fascinating subject to me so a couple months after turning 18 I decided to give it a shot! Here I am now!! Loving every minute of it!

Did you have an worries about doing porn?
Not at all! I thought long and hard (no pun intended) about my choice. I’m only worried about right now. Ill deal with things as they come later in life. One step at a time right?Yep, one step at a time, but how far would you like to go in the industry? As far as I can go! I’m in this for the long run and I dont plan on stopping any time soon. Id like to continue to be on camera for a couple years and then possibly move onto something like directing or more behind the scenes work. Maybe have my own studio? Who knows! The possibilities are ENDLESS if you have the right mindset.

Who would you most like to work with?
This question is like a signature interview question!! I always feel like I’m on the spot answering it too cause there are SOO many great models that Id love to work with!! But just to name a few Chase Harding, Patrick Kennedy, Keith Conner, Cody Cachet, Cody Kyler and the lovely Brent Corrigan.
I get the feeling it wont be long before you’re working with some of those guys. Now, talking of the actual work, tell me, is it hard getting and staying hard when filming?Sometimes it is definitely difficult Jason. Sometimes there is a lot of stopping and going so there’s time to lose the moment. Sometimes the chemistry is just so obvious that it makes it easier to stay hard. It all just depends really.

Any ‘trade’ secrets from behind the scenes you want to share with is, or you can tell us about? Any tips?
Filming is such a fun process!! The environment is usually very up beat and everyone is enjoying what they are doing! There are times during a scene where we’ll take a short break for water or just to talk about how the scene is going and where it needs to end up at the end. A scene can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on how things are going. Ive learned that it takes a lot longer the more people you have in a scene. So just remember that when your watching a scene that is 24 minutes long that it could have actually taken 2 hours for that 24 minutes. For anyone reading that is thinking about taking a shot in the business all I can say is that having a positive attitude and a good outlook on things will do you wonders! Porn is a job and it needs to be treated like one.

What’s the kinkiest thing you’ve done on screen and errm off?
Spanking is the most kinkiest thing I have done ON screen. I’m hoping to get into some more kinkier stuff to start exploring. A few years ago I had sex in a hotel stairwell while I was on a date. We ran into the hotel to escape the rain and decided to walk around when all of a sudden we were making out up against some random room and slowly worked our way to the stairwell. Probably one of the hottest moments of my life.

Do all your friends and family know about your choice of career, & what have they said?
Yes. All of my friends and family know that I have chosen to do porn. Surprisingly they are ALL very supportive of it. I get the occasional “be careful honey” or the “are you sure you know what your doing?”. . but they have all been thankfully sooo supportive and I cannot be any happier with it!

Wow, that’s impressive, what did you say, presumably you don’t just come out and say, “mom, dad, I’m gonna do porn for a living?”
Actually Jason, thats exactly how I did it! I mentioned the idea to my mom driving to a friends house and she just kinda laughed and thought it was a phase or that I was only joking. When I actually decided to pursue it I just told her that I was going to do porn. She then told her fiance and my grandmother. We then decided it was best to tell the entire family via Facebook message seeings how my family is in Michigan, we didnt want any confusion or any of the family members saying anything to me that would be offensive. In the end it all worked out and everyone is extremely supportive of my decision. I couldnt be any happier about it!

That’s great, now going back a little, when did you first know you were gay?
Back in 4th grade I started to realize I was attracted to guys. I was unaware that this wasnt normal so I didnt think anything of it at the time. . . little did I know. Was coming out easy for you? How did you do it?My mom and I were driving back home from my grandparents house when I turned to her and said “Mom, I have something to tell you. .” When I said that I knew that she automatically knew what I was going to tell her. Indeed she did know too! I told her about my boyfriend and everything. It was a lot easier than what I thought it would be. My family pretty much already had their suspicions I guess. Coming out definitely lifted a HUGE weight off my shoulders.

Are you with anyone, like romantically at the moment?
No unfortunately not. Part of me wants to stay single and focus on myself and my career but the other half of me almost needs the boyfriend like figure. Just someone I can cuddle up to at night and hold. Who knows though!? The right guy might just come around!

Have you ever been in love?
Ohh Jason, this is always a tough question to answer because I have no clue! At the time of a couple relationships I did feel like I was in love. But then again what exactly is love you know? I’m not sure if I have ever been IN LOVE but I definitely feel like it was something close or similar to love.

Do you think working in porn gets in the way of relationships and dating?
To be honest I believe it all depends on your partner and how open minded they are. Trust is also a huge factor needed in a relationship when your in porn I think. This isn’t really a question I can answer seeings how I haven’t had the experience. I know a lot of guys who are very turned on by the fact that I do porn and others think of it as trashy. I’m just trying to fly solo right now though.

Ok, but what kinda guys turn you on?
Jocky Twinks FOR SURE. Kind of like a Patrick Kennedy haha. Muscular yet twinky.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a porn star?
To be honest I have no clue. Probably still folding clothes at Hollister. I am very thankful for where I am right now. I wouldn’t give any of it up for anything.

What’s next for you?
Thats a good question! Im trying to get on my feet and thinking about moving out soon. Possibly going to start looking for a small part time job too just to keep the money flowing. I plan to continue working for BoyCrush and Helix as much as needed. We’ll see where life takes me I guess. I just dont want to get old haha. Hopefully I’ll be a cute old guy though!

Ahh, I’m sure you’ll be a cute older guy, do you like some older guys, or find them attractive?
Awe thanks! I can only hope so!! I find older guys, who you can tell use to be a super hot twink, waay attractive. I had a flight attendant who was an old twink on my way to Phoenix. I was hoping to join the mile high club that day but things didn’t work out haha.

Haha, well, there’s always next time, anyway, we’re at the end of our time together, but like always, I’ll end my interview with a little request, Hayden, go on, be a honey, tell us a secret?
I have a fear of birds. . Idk why but they just creep me out. The way they move their heads, their weird beaks the fact that they can get anywhere super fast by flying. . . idk they are just suuuuper creepy to me haha.

I’d like to thank Hayden for a super interview, all the way through the process he’s been charming, friendly, happy and willing to oblige. He sure is making head way in the world of Twink porn, his open smile, sexy body, lovely eyes have already built him up a large fan base. If he carries on this with the positive, yet down to earth, attitude he currently has, then the sky is the limit for this young legend in the making.

Find out more about Hayden on twitter and on his new site.

It’s not often that you hear a song or a singer that just halt you dead in your tracks, make you stop what you’re doing and listen. But that’s exactly what happened to me the other day, I was so captivated the other day when I stumbled upon the Facebook page of South Jordan, that I had to stop writing a piece for the local paper and listen, and I mean really listen.

This new band create a fresh, exciting and rich sound. They are already setting social networking sites of Myspace and Facebook alight with excitement. A sound that is interesting, fresh, entertaining with meaningful and emotive lyrics are gaining an them an ever expanding fan base, so I just had to learn more about these five young guys who, collectively call themselves ‘South Jordan’

The band is made up of Michael David Hall, the sexy hunksome fella on lead vocals, whose voice is husky, deep and breathy and so packed with emotion. Next up is Bobby Campbell who plays piano and guitar. And also writes the emotive, raw, authentic songs with Michael. Mike Chan hails from Kuala Lumpur as is the bands happy synth master, David Witucki from South Bend takes on the bass and also provides the harmonious backing vocals. Finally finishing off this five piece nicely is appealing Evan Chapman on the drums.

Drawing from many influences, these young guys come together to make music with passion, honesty and power. Here in an exclusive interview, Michael David Hall, SoJo’s front man and enigmatic lead singer talks openly and honestly to our very own Jason Shaw.

Michael, you’ve got a lovely fresh and exciting sound, can you fill me in on the background, how was South Jordan formed?
SoJo formed 2 years ago when I met Bobby and Mikey through a mutual friend. Bobby and I were both writing our own music, and when the 3 of us sat down and jammed we just clicked. There was a lot of chemistry in our sound – it felt right.

Where did the name ’South Jordan’ come from?
We’ve lived on South Jordan Avenue here in Bloomington for 3 years now. We came up with the idea at Hooters …. yea…. haha.

You’ve got over 15,000 fans on Facebook, nearly double that on Myspace, are you surprised at how popular you are?
We’re always surprised at how far the music has reached. It’s an amazing feeling to have all this support from people over the internet. And its even better when we finally get to meet our internet friends at live shows.

Are you signed to a record company?
No record deal yet. We are going to New York City from May 18th till the 22nd – While we’re there we will be performing privately for a few of the biggest labels. We’re very excited for that shot.

Wow, that’s really exciting, good luck with that, but, What’s the best for you, doing videos, recording in the studio or performing live?
All of those are very different things. We’ve really started to love our live shows.. we’ve come a long way with our sound and our performance is getting better. The acoustic videos we’ve made (which can be found on YouTube here) can take a while to nail down – When we are filming those it can get stressful sometimes because we want the product to be as perfect as possible.

Oh that video for Firefly is really great, who directed it? Looks like it had a big budget?
Thanks so much – Dark Hound directed that video. The budget for that production was a whopping zero (0) dollars.

They are an amazing group of students at Indiana University who have put all their time into making movies outside of school. We’re so grateful that we got the chance to make a video with them… really grateful. It’s amazing that they made that product without a budget.

Where do you draw your influences from?
People think that this is a basic question… it’s extremely hard to answer this correctly for me. Bono and Chris Martin (coldplay) are so good at being frontmen for their bands….I like to study them. I love to watch those two men work their audience. I hope to one day control a stage like that.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Any album by The Beatles. Those men wrote the best songs that will ever be written.

What’s the writing process like for you Michael? Do you sit and create, bouncing ideas of each other?
Bobby and I usually bounce ideas off of one another. We’re the two songwriters in South Jordan. I’ll send him a hook or idea and 9 out of 10 times it will be turned down. But the one he likes will be the one that our fans will love. And vice versa

What song are you most proud of?
I am currently writing a song about my sister , Aubrey. When that song is finished it will be one of my finest works. It means an awful lot to me

I can’t wait to hear it. The songs you do are all really powerful, so full of raw emotion, they have the ability to really move people, do you find they are easy to write?
Haha. Definitely not easy. Bobby and I are both relatively new as songwriters…We’ve both been writing for 3 or 4 years and it’s always a challenge to say what we really want to say. One of the hardest things about the POP music genre is that the songs are supposed to be immediately understood. We’d like to play with these radio boundaries in the future. We want to challenge our listeners to think

What’s the story behind the song Forever?
Bobby and I wrote that song out in NYC with a very successful producer named Kyle Kelso. We knew while recording the demo that that song was special. Its got a positive vibe and a catchy chorus that people love to sing along to.

Fatal Flaw feels very authentic, very honest, was this a personal tale of unrequited desire? Whats the meaning?
Bobby wrote that tune. It’s about a girl that worked in a coffee shop that he kept on going to see. (very attractive brunette) She was a tease, led him into thinking she was interested. The best part of the whole thing is that she has no clue that that song is about her and she’s definitely heard it before.

Ok, so let’s take a look at the future now, what’s next in the pipeline for South Jordan?
I think we’ll get a record deal within the next 6 months to a year. And if/when that happens we’re going to party very hard for a day or two with our closest friends and our families. But when the partying is over things will have to get really serious. We’ll have to work even harder to keep the snowball rolling.

Personally, I somehow don’t think you’ll have to wait long before that deal is offered, but where would you hope to be in, say, 5 years time?
I hope to be with my band. I hope music works out so I can help support others in need and hold a positive influence. Thats my biggest goal.

What’s the best thing & worst thing about being in South Jordan?
Touring is such a good excuse to eat McDonalds!! we pound hamburgers like its nobodies business!

The best thing is that I am living my dream.

The worst thing that could happen is a total loss of my own privacy. But one day I will try and use that to my advantage and be a great influence.

Ok, Michael, let’s get a lil bit more personal now,
What makes you tick, what really is the inspiration in your life?
I feel incredibly grateful for my family and my best friends. Most of the time when i’m sitting around with my dad I feel like Mufasa is talking to me. My dad is the strongest man I will ever know.

I am inspired by love. I think technology and society is distracting us from what really matters – family, best friends, the earth.

We spend too much of our time looking into computer screens and texting while we should be running around outside and having real conversations with people face to face.

Haha, hippies don’t have to have dreads i guess. That is what i truly believe

Are you romantically involved with anyone at the moment? Or are you too busy to look for love?
Haven’t had a girlfriend in a while. It’s kinda hard when you’re on the road with guys all day and you don’t have a girl to call.

I think all the guys in South Jordan want a girl. But we are climbing a musical mountain right now and life is very hectic between school and touring.

You’re a young good looking guy, did you know you’re already starting to build a sizable gay fan base? How do you feel about that?
Thank you very much. I am very flattered when anyone thinks I am attractive.

What’s your view on the fight for equality and gay marriage?
I think it’s sad we live in a “free” country that degrades minorities. It’s a joke that politics have any say in whether or not two people can be married.

So, would SoJo ever play live at a gay pride event?
Haha that’s definitely not our typical venue.. but I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t.

Any message you want to give the Best Gay Blog readers?
I strongly hope that those who give South Jordan a chance will be pleased with our music and our message. We’re a very young band but we’re growing so much, and the support we get is the fuel we use to keep getting better.

Ok, now, I always end an interview with a little request, so Michael, go on, tell us a secret?
I legit knew I wanted to sing by the time I was 6 – because all those disney studs were getting the hottest babes by the end of the movies because they all had great voices

——

I’m sure it’s Michael’s gonna be the one getting a lot more ‘babes’ in the not too distant future. I’m also very sure that it’s not going to be long before we’ll hear and see a lot more of South Jordan in the mainstream. If you take a little time to listen to their music, I’m sure you’ll agree, these young guys have a big future ahead of them. A record deal is almost certainly just around the corner, which I can hardly wait for, I’d also like to thank Michael for his openness and honestly during this interview, it’s great to feel the passion.

For more information on Michael and the other boys from South Jordan please visit their website SouthJordanMusic.com or join in the fun of the Facebook fan page they have, as Michael says ”It’s the most important site for us because we can interact with everyone that visits” and they do try to answer and reply to all the comments they get.

Before returning to his romantic comedy roots in Leap Year, opening January 8, the 31-year-old Brit gives Advocate.com the goods on his costar’s snuggly body and sensitive kisses, plus that time they spent 45 minutes drinking gin in their underwear.

Advocate.com: You’ve worked on a number of films with gay themes. How conscious are you of your gay fan base?
Matthew Goode: I know it’s a typical fucking actor thing to say, but I’m not terribly conscious of any fan base, really. I’m not particularly known in my own country, so it’s not like I come out the door to see three lovely chaps wearing scarves and saying, “Good morning, Matthew, we love you!”

When John Stamos suited up for the cover of The Advocate in 2006, he was playing doctor on ER and promoting his role as a gay wedding planner striking for marriage equality rights in the A&E original movie Wedding Wars. The former General Hospital heartthrob best known as Uncle Jesse on the hit family sitcom Full House is now performing to full houses as mama’s boy Albert Peterson in the first Broadway revival of the Tony-winning 1960 musical Bye Bye Birdie, which opened October 15 at Henry Miller’s Theatre. The eternally youthful 46-year-old called Advocate.com to confess his campy obsession with Birdie costar Gina Gershon and the boozy truth behind that now-infamous Australian morning show interview.

Gene Dante and the future starlets “THE ROMANTIC LEAD”. Dante discusses why he wouldn’t make a good porn star, his new video “C*** Star”, and his love letter to The Dresden Doll’s Brian Viglione.

Courtesy of Blue Streak Consulting:

Gene Dante is the master of the dichotomy. He is both a musician and an actor. He’s a songwriter with his mind drawn inward, and a performer with his energy focused outward. The music he creates is both flamboyantly glamorous and strikingly gritty. Dante’s new album, The Romantic Lead resonates with the sparkle of glitter and the rawness of the gutter. It is both class and trash, edge and polish, emotion and entertainment.

The juxtaposition of such predilections should not be surprising since Dante has walked the line between theater and music throughout his career. Over the years, he has toured with The Rocky Horror Show in Europe, formed a production company in Boston to stage and star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and played The Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Now, Dante has focused his lens on his rock career with his band The Future Starlets, where he draws upon his theatrical skills to bring a dynamic visual element to his music.

With the help of drummer Tamora Gooding, bassist Jim Collins, and guitarist Scott Patalano, (formerly of renowned group Mistle Thrush), Gene’s engaging songs have been fleshed out into the complex, compelling tracks that comprise The Romantic Lead, which was produced by longtime A&R exec and record producer Peter Lubin. The album was recorded and mixed at Q Division in Somerville, MA and will be released by Omnirox Entertainment on February 3. The Romantic Lead is a fully-realized vision, accentuated with Dante’s theatrical flair and remarkable ability to use music to tell a story. “I always envisioned a record much like a show or an opera,” he says. “I think a record should have an ebb and flow, conflict and climax.”

The crooning on “The Dreamers” and “The Starlet Hits the Wall” and the soaring textures on “Like A Satellite” reveal Dante’s ability to draw upon influences like Brian Eno, David Bowie and Neil Diamond in a way that reinvigorates post-glam with new life. Dante says “C Star,” (accompanied by a sexy, swaggering video, directed by Michael Pope) is “intentionally unplayable by mainstream radio. If I must wax intellectual, it’s a proletariat response to the invasion of tabloid photojournalism and the objectification/devaluation of entertainers as a sub-breed.”

Here, the provocatively candid Dante expounds on the Metropolis quality in his music, the process of writing a song called “C*** Star,” and his love letter to The Dresden Dolls’ Brian Viglione.

Q; What kinds of things inspire you to write a song?
Gene Dante: I write about imperfections, flaws, things that don’t work out. Most of the time it has to do with failure. I don’t want to write about the winners. There are plenty of beautiful losers in this world, people who don’t deserve to be losers. They’ve fallen from grace. Those people are much more intriguing than winners. I’m interested in how people struggle. If you look at the people who’ve created great art, they didn’t really have an easy life.

Q: Do your lyrics come from your experience?
GD: Some are based on my life, some are embellished. Nothing is entirely true or entirely untrue. I’m not trying to preach or teach a lesson. I really just enjoy describing things. There’s always going to be some smoldering Metropolis quality to what I do, but I don’t know if it’s always going to have a point.

Q: What’s a Metropolis quality?
GD: Something akin to greatness but no longer in its pristine state. I think of Blade Runner with all of this high technology, but everything is rusty and broken–things that have faded from glory, but now take on a new glory. Think about the Rocky Horror castle and costumes. The story is more intriguing because things are falling apart. It makes you think: How did they get that way? How did things used to be?

Q: How would you describe your style?
GD: I always say its post-glam, rocked-out rat pack. I like the style of old Hollywood, like the way the Oscars used to be years ago. Guys like Frank Sinatra, Peter O’Toole, and Cary Grant really rock my world. They are the guys I’d like to be. I love the idea of a black tie affair meeting some kind of trash quality.

Q: What do you mean by trash?
GD: Let’s face it—I’m not of the elite. I’d call myself more of a trash prince. Trash makes things more real. Think of old Hollywood combined with Lou Reed in his deepest heroin days. Anytime you can juxtapose two very different things, that’s where the magic is.

Q: Who has inspired you musically?
GD: The Bowie influence is definitely there. He pushed musical boundaries, especially his albums with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti, and his lyrics were superior to all of his contemporaries in his glam rock days. If I could dress like Ziggy Stardust and get away with it, I would. But I’m not an anorexic little twink. It just doesn’t work. I’d look like Gary Glitter more than Ziggy Stardust, and it would just be ridiculous.

Q: Well, there’s a kind of gay sensibility to what Bowie did in the 70s. It’s kind of glam rock meets gay pride parade. Do you think you have a gay sensibility?
GD: If I do, I wouldn’t even know. What does that mean? Am I sensitive to gay issues? If it means that I’m writing with gay people in mind, I would say yes. I very much try to keep my songs gender neutral, though. I make a conscious effort to make sure I’m not selling one sexuality over another.

Q: But if you were in love with a man, wouldn’t it be natural for you to be proclaiming your love for him in a song?
GD: Christian music has single-handedly ruined it for the man-on-man love song. Whenever a guy sings a song about another guy, it always sounds like a Christian rock song. Seriously, listen to the lyrics like, “I love him, I would lay down my soul for him.” It’s bullshit. Who knows? Perhaps some artist has infiltrated the Christian charts and one day he’ll say, “Sorry Jesus…fooled ya! These songs were about my boyfriend!”, but I doubt it. Damn…that could’ve been me. Maybe one day I will write a duet for two guys and get Neil Patrick Harris to sing it with me, but I’m afraid it will sound like something out of Cabaret.

Q: Tell me how your song “C Star” came about. With a title that’s short for “Cock Star,” it will certainly be of interest to the gay community.
GD: The words just came to me one day–it was like automatic writing. I thought, “Oh my god, can I sing this?” Peoples’ jaws were just dropping to the floor in the studio. I spent 3 weeks banging my head against the wall trying to come up with alternate lyrics, but it just wasn’t happening. If we get vilified for it, so be it. I have nothing to lose.

Q: It’s rare for a musical artist to be so sexually honest and open. Some might say that the song is a shock tactic to get attention?
GD: Every performer and musician wants attention. The ones that say they don’t are lying. I just wanted to address my hatred for how much entertainers must give up in order to get a buzz going. It’s so easy to exploit unknown artists and actors, particularly when it comes to sex. When I was in New York trying to get work as an actor, my agent at the time was excited because she could secure me an audition for an indie film that would feature actual sex in it. I said, “Wait a minute…a porn film?” She said, “No, it’s not. It’s an art film.” The audition was essentially getting naked and parading around the room. When filming, you would actually have sex. I stared at my agent and said, “This is what you think I have to do to get a job on camera? Fuck that.” I have more talent than that. And let’s face it, dude, I’ve seen myself in a full-length mirror. I wouldn’t make a very good porn star. I like my porn with no dialogue and my movies with no porn. Maybe I’m a prude, I don’t know.

Q: But “C Star” is the opposite of prudery.
GD: I decided to face my fear head on, using a familiar vehicle: songwriting. I’m going to write a song about my dick. It’s going to be ironic, self-deprecating, and catchy, and people are going to love it and hate it at the same time. Rock musicians have always written songs about their dicks. Led Zeppelin used a lemon. Motley Crue used a gun. And for me, my dick is a song: not super long, but it pounds like a hammer.

Q: Let’s talk about “Brian, My Darling,” which you say is a love letter to Brian Vigliano of the Dresden Dolls.
GD: This was written on a dare. The Dresden Dolls came up once in a conversation, and there were some differences of opinions about their songs. I’m definitely a fan of theirs, so I was challenged to write a Dresden Dolls-type song. Brian’s dynamite; I love him. He’s one of the greatest live drummers I’ve ever seen; so dynamic and visually interesting. To raise the stakes, I decided to make the song a love note to him. It’s a fictitious love note, and – aside from the title – it’s not gender-specific. See, I’m consistent.

Q: Do you believe in true love?
GD: I think it’s absolutely possible. It happens every day. Whether we’re meant to be together forever, I don’t know. No animal mates for life in the animal kingdom. I definitely want it to be possible. For me, I think it will happen with someone who sees the kind of life that I live, respects what I’m doing, and wants to be a part of it.
