She-Ra Turns 25

Do you remember the sister of He-Man? Her name was She-Ra and guess what folks, you’re getting on in years as She-Ra is celebrating her 25th birthday this week.

According to Dave Rubin of Rubinville:

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the Princess of Power herself, She-Ra. For those of you unfamiliar with her (as hard to believe as that may be), She-Ra was He-Man’s sister, who was spun-off into her own series with her own villains and with their own set of fairly ridiculous plots.

A Really Bad Week

Let’s face it, this hasn’t exactly been a stellar week for the LGBT community (or month as far as that goes). There’s been a lot of bad things happening and I’m sure that some religious righter is celebrating saying God is punishing us.But, there’s a really interesting perspective on who is to blame over the less than desirable week we’ve all had, over at Rubenville.

As Dave Rubin writes:

So, naturally, Perez Hilton, the self-proclaimed “Queen of All Media” tweets about how awful this all is, and various groups start doing videos of celebrities saying it is okay to be gay. And yes, that is good, people seeing that there are people who say it is okay to be who you are. But at the same time everyone knows about all the closeted actors, musicians, TV personalities and news anchors, who all talk about the problem but don’t practice what they preach. Instead they tacitly endorse something wrong with gay. And making videos about suicide keeps the focus on suicide, so then all you see on TV are more stories about suicide, and then the same fashionistas and closet cases who wonder why. It is all nobody’s fault and everybody’s fault at the same time.

A Real Gay Superhero

At some point, you’ve probably joked about Batman and Robin, or any other superhero who wears tights being gay, but when it comes to the world of real life superheroes, there is one who openly gay and is out to bring justice.

According to an interview on The Six Pack, our favorite gay talk show hosted by Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin, Mike Rogers fills us in on how Ken Mehlman, the former RNC Chair being gay, really goes back further than just yesterday’s news.

If there’s such a thing as a gay superhero, Mike Rogers just might be it. (Our research department has yet to determine whether he wears the tights, however.) Rogers’ blog (blog.blogactive.com) and investigative work were the inspiration behind the 2009 documentary Outrage, which told the stories of several closeted politicians who were actively promoting anti-gay legislation. We asked Rogers to give us his thoughts on former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman’s coming out, as well as the current Senate campaign by Charlie Crist.
