I’m not the only one that seems to think so either as our Vice-President Joe Biden says the same.

There’s a great post by Alvin McEwen on his blog Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters that does a great job of pointing out just how stupid it’s become.

According to the post:

And if Focus on the Family and these other religious right groups even cared about “family” or “reality,” they would support all family units, not just the one they think are superior.

One would think that an organization with the word “family” in its name would be more concerned with doing this rather than trying to create a caste system.

Peter LaBarbera, who runs Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, said he disputes “their definition of ’conservative,’ which would have the movement’s Founding Fathers rolling in their graves.”

Matt Barber, who heads the Liberty Counsel, has been actively seeking a boycott of the event unless GOProud was dismissed as a co-sponsor.

“Among other things, GOProud advocates in favor of both ’gay marriage’ and ’civil unions,’ against pro-marriage constitutional amendments ; is pushing for the repeal of ’Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and advocates in favor of federal ’partnership benefits’ for homosexuals,” LaBarbera quoted Barber as writing in an open email.

Now Focus on the Family has responded. Senior Vice-President Tom Minnery told right-wing site One News Now he has no problem with other CPAC co-sponsors disagreeing with Focus on the Family, including GOProud.

“We think we’ve got to engage the broader conservative movement and to be salt and light in that environment,” he said. “We believe that social conservatism, biblical Christianity has a lot to say to the political culture–and we want to be where the action is, so that’s why we’re engaging it.”

He opposes the boycott. Instead, he advocated coming to the conference “to counter the agenda of GOProud.”

On its website, GOProud wrote, “GOProud looks forward to continuing to work with the conservative movement to promote policies that will improve the lives of all Americans, including gays and lesbians.”

President Barack Obama insisted Monday he still wants to scrap what he calls a discriminatory federal marriage law, even as his administration angered gay rights activists by defending the it in court.

The president said his administration’s stance in a California court case is not about defending traditional marriage, but is instead about defending traditional legal practice.

Justice Department lawyers filed new papers Monday seeking to throw out a lawsuit brought by a gay couple challenging the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA. Gay rights groups say that by doing so, the administration is failing to follow through on campaign promises made by Obama last year to work to repeal the law.

Meeting in Chicago on Monday, the ABA House of Delegates approved on a voice vote a resolution urging repeal of a portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman.

Proponents say that if Congress eliminated that language it would clear the way for same-sex spouses to get equal treatment in terms of Social Security and other federal benefits.

It sounds like the lawsuit has been brewing for a while, but this is exciting and unexpected news for me. Apparently Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) has filed a lawsuit challenging the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court. The case is known as Gill v. Office of Personnel Management.

The DOMA is a federal law that has several provisions:

* Section 2 allows each state in the Union to refuse to recognize, acknowledge, or give effect to a same-sex marriage performed in another state.

* Section 3 defines marriage, for the purposes of federal law, as a union between one man and one woman. This essentially prohibits the federal government from recognizing, acknowledging, or giving effect to any same-sex marriage, even if the marriage was legally performed in a U.S. state, such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, or California. In other words, Section 3 denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits extended to married opposite-sex couples.
