A Bittersweet Election

November 4, 2008 marked a transformational day in American history. With the election of the first African-American as president of the United States. The world, all of a sudden, became closer and a bit more unified. People were rejoicing in five continents. Although supporters of John McCain and Sarah Palin understandably may not have felt euphoric when the networks declared Barack Obama president at 11:00 p.m. EDT, I sure did.

But my elation was doused not that long afterwards, as three gay marriage bans and one anti-gay adoption initiative all apparently succeeded, reminding me that the country still has not taken that next big step.

Reasons Not to Vote for McCain

A lot of people think that this is just another presidential race, with the winner getting to bring their own particular ideas and policies to the table, but that little else will change. But that’s not true. At least, not for one of the two big-party candidates running.

If John McCain is elected president, he will directly or indirectly subvert or dismantle key elements of this country that have made it great, and we’ll come out of his presidency even worse off than we are now. Here are several reasons why, and hopefully at least one of them will convince you to vote for someone else.

Dear Senator Obama

After last night’s debate, I am more convinced than ever that you are the right person for the job as President of the United States. The directness and sincerity you exude further exemplifies some of your leadership qualities that have made you my choice. Your views on how to move the economy to a stable state, foreign policy, Osama Bin Laden, Al Quada, energy, health care and education fit well with my own views for the prosperity of this country. Now for one more very important point that effects millions of voters…gay marriage.

McCain Seeks a Place to Hide

Since he’s not ready to deal with the economy, or even debate the issues, McCain wants to suspend his campaign to focus on the “historic” crisis facing the U.S. economy. Child Chesse, that’s not really the issue, but here’s more.

It was not immediately clear how extensive the suspension he announced would be — whether it would include dropping television advertising or just canceling scheduled appearances. McCain took no questions after reading his statement.

Immediately after the announcement, White House press secretary Dana Perino released this statement: “We welcome Sen. McCain’s announcement. We are making progress in negotiations on the financial markets rescue legislation, but we have not finished it yet. Bipartisan support from Sens. McCain and Obama would be helpful in driving to a conclusion.”

Special Election Update

The election is coming quickly, and unfortunately, there are is still much work to be done. McCain and Obama are running “neck and neck” in the polls and most importantly in the swing states where the election is likely to be decided. We can NOT afford to take anything for granted. McCain does stand a very good chance of winning this election. We (as in the GLBT community) have a duty, yes a duty, to get out and make the change happen.

Everything — absolutely everything — we have fought for in the last 40 years is at stake. Trust me. There is nothing more important than the next three months of our lives. Nothing!

A Vote in the Wrong Direction

If you are the parent or friend of someone that is gay, and plan on voting for McCain, please don’t. If you truly support your son/daughter/friend/relative, know that voting for McCain is showing your support for his views against the LGBT community, and his views against your son/daughter/friend/relative’s life.
