Hollywood Homophobia

More than one Hollywood veteran has come out to say stay in the closet as they offer advice to aspiring actors who are gay because they claim Hollywood is largely homophobic.

However not all people agree with that advice nor do they perceive Hollywood as the homophobia plagued city that others claim it is.

According to a post on On Top Magazine:

‘Glee’ star Jane Lynch disagrees with actors Rupert Everett and Richard Chamberlain on whether Hollywood is homophobic.

Lynch, who stars as sharp-tongued coach Sue Sylvester on the Fox musical-comedy Glee, has rejected claims that openly gay actors can’t get work in Hollywood.

It’s Cold Out, Stay In!

It’s c-c-c-cold outside…that is at least if you’re an actor, who happens to be gay, and that’s why some gay actors still advise others to stay in (the closet).

According to a post on GBM News:

The 76-year-old actor, who became a teen heartthrob in the ‘60’s playing TV’s “Dr. Kildare” and who recently appeared on NBC’s “Chuck,” told The Advocate, “Personally, I wouldn’t advise a gay leading man-type actor to come out.”

Spacey(d) Out

It seems with most celebrities that at one point and time…or many points and times, the speculation of their sexuality comes up as a topic of conversation.Some like John Travolta get mad and threaten to sue, others simply brush it off and take it as a compliment. But then there are those who kindly tell people it’s none of their business, much like Kevin Spacey.

According to a post on Lainey Gossip, this is how Spacey replied when he was asked why he wasn’t out of the closet:

“Look, I might have lived in England for the last several years, but I’m still an American citizen and I have not given up my right to privacy. People have different reasons for the way they live their lives. You cannot put everyone’s reasons in the same box. It’s just a line I’ve never crossed and never will. But why is it in this country that kids might think it’s OK to bully and make fun of somebody? I’ll tell you why, because what do they see in the media happening all the time? In the media they seem to think that’s OK, so if we stop using sexuality as a weapon against people, maybe everyone will eventually get cool with it. I don’t live a lie. You have to understand that people who choose not to discuss their personal lives are not living a lie. That is a presumption that people jump to. Look, at the end of the day, people have to respect people’s differences. I am different than some people would like me to be. I just don’t buy into that the personal can be political. I just think that’s horses–t. No one’s personal life is in the public interest. It’s gossip, bottom line. End of story. Now some people feed that. They’ll go to the trendy restaurants where all the photographers are and then bitch about being famous. But if you don’t want to feed that and you want your life to be based around what your work is then it ends there.”

After coming out to his parents at 18, Wilson Cruz’s father threw him out of the house, leaving him to live in his car for months. Cruz took off for Hollywood, but he refused to hide his sexuality. His approach worked and landed him his breakout role in 1994 on the TV drama My So-Called Life, playing Ricky Vasquez, a gay teenager.

Does it Stunt Your Growth?

Does kissing another guy, that is if you are a guy, at least one who is trying to build a career as an actor, and letting someone else take pictures of it stunt your growth…as an actor that is?Well, if it does, I’d dare say this young one could always have a pretty good run at it in gay porn, cause he’s already got the name for it and he’s definitely a hottie!

According to a post on Queerty:

Colton Haynes is a no-name model-actor with bit parts on The Hills (“model,” himself), Transformers (“cafe kid,” uncredited) CSI: Miami (one episode), and Pushing Daises (one episode). So why pay him any mind?

Out in Hollywood?

Being out as an actor has had mixed reviews. Some people have said it makes life as an actor more difficult, others seem to think that being out is a detriment or that it will even kill your career.

However, there are those who think that being out is really the only way to be at peace with yourself and that it has little if any impact on your career as an actor.

One such person is Sir Ian McKellen. According to a post on Hollywood News:

“If you’re going around telling a lie you may get by but you won’t be half as happy as you would be if you came out. If that means you have to give up hopes of being one of the three or four young sex symbols in Hollywood so be it. You probably weren’t going to be one of those anyway. That happens by chance and it doesn’t last for very long.”

Lynch to Host SNL

The award winning star of “Glee” is set to host an evening with Saturday Night Live, but as the actress says, she’s a bit nervous because when it comes to SNL, there is no “take two”.

According to OTRC.com:

If you’ve ever watched Glee on FOX, you know that Jane Lynch is a Cheerio force to be reckoned with. If not, know that she’s one of the funniest actresses on television, but a bit hesitant about hosting Saturday Night Live.

Life After Noah

Stephens is best known for his leading role as Noah in the LOGO TV series “Noah’s Arc“, which ran for two seasons ending in 2006 and was followed up with a full length featured film entitled “Jumping the Broom” (2008). His acting career has given him the opportunity to play a wide variety of roles in both movies and made for TV shows, including, but not limited to, “Two and a Half Men“, “Ugly Betty“, “Boy Culture” and “Another Gay Movie“.

An Awwfully Gleeful Kiss?

So rumor has it that the ‘Glee’ character played by openly gay actor Chris Colfer will be getting a boyfriend this season, so naturally, many want to know if they’ll share a kiss. If they do, Colfer says he’s “fine with it”.

According to E Online:

“I’m fine with it,” he told me at the Emmys. “I don’t know how middle America would feel about it, [but] if it’s done in a tasteful way…I want it to be very cute and have people go, ‘Aww!’“

Still Angry!

As nit picking, persnickety and utterly fastidious Niles Crane, David Hyde Pierce earned a place in the hearts of the millions of Frasier fans all over the world.

Now the 51 year old actor is treading the boards in London’s West End for the play ‘Le Bette’ the Molière-style comedy written in rhyming couplets. Since 2004, when Frasier came to an end, he’s mainly been working in theatre in New York, winning a Tony award for his performance in the Broadway musical Curtains and appearing in Python spoof Spamalot – ‘That was absolute bliss,’ he says heartfully in an interview with London’s Metro freepaper.

‘I was a huge fan of Monty Python when I was in high school. As broad and absurd as their situations are, I was always drawn to the seriousness with which they attacked their material.’

Despite or perhaps because of his mega fame as Niles, David is, as perhaps you might have guessed a very private man. He married his partner of 25 years in back in 2008 in California, two weeks later the state voted against same sex marriage and he’s still a tad angry.

‘As a person who is least happy calling attention to themselves, to have to be suddenly very public about their life, and who felt very angry about the government interfering, was very painful. I’d love to just shut up about gay rights but so many gay men are not able to live their lives in the same meaningful way as other people.’

An actor unhappy about getting attention? Surely a contradiction.

‘Actually, most actors are the same. You only show off on stage because that’s the place where you aren’t you. Acting gives you permission to do stuff you’ve never done before.’
