This week see’s the start of the 7th Homotopia festival in the UK’s top northern city of Liverpool.

This month long festival is designed to showcases the very best in Lesbian, Gay Bi and Treans art and culture, which includes dance, film, cabaret, writing, poetry, literature, and a few exhibitions.

This year for the very first time there is a youth strand in the festival, called Right To Love, which promises to offer an interesting insight to the mind of the young.

Other highlights include a reading by leading lesbian author Stella Duffy, the comedy and music night Lavender Girls and the play Mother/Son by Jeffrey Solomon.

The pull of this event is widening, with a an exhibition in Turku, Finland, while the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and British Embassy in Ankara are funding research into the possibility of holding a Homotopia festival in Turkey.

Festival director Gary Everett said: “Homotopia offers a veritable smorgasbord of entertainment for everyone of all ages. From the hilarious, outrageous and subversive to the thought-provoking and challenging. International artists from Italy, Mexico and the US rub shoulders with writers and performers from Wales, Scotland and Liverpool. We are now the only LGBT cultural festival in the north of England – come and find out why.”

We’re like the majority – what I refer to as the mainstream non-gays – there are factions, special interest groups, one-issue advocates, the nondescript and the brazen. But this diversity within the community also has its prejudices, and we all don’t love the same things. It seems to be politically-incorrect that I and some other gays have little tolerance for gay pride parades. My own taste in parades would encompass… no, wait a minute… I don’t think I like any, what I call, frivolous parades, regardless of the message. Being an equal-opportunity curmudgeon, I also cringe when I see a Shriner on a little tricycle, or a mascot in a plush costume coming my way.

In the 1990′s, teachers and community organizations determined that a month should be designated for GLBT history. They chose October because public schools are in session and traditions, such as National Coming Out Day, occur then.

GLBT History Month is endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association, and other national organizations. In 2006, Equality Forum assumed responsibility for GLBT History Month.

Celebrate Our Heritage

The GLBT community is the only community worldwide that does not learn its history at home, in public schools or in religious institutions. GLBT History Month teaches our heritage, provides role models, builds community and makes the civil rights statement of our extraordinary national and international contributions.

About Equality Forum

Equality Forum is a national and international GLBT civil rights organization with an educational focus. Equality Forum coordinates GLBT History Month, produces documentary films, undertakes high-impact initiatives and presents the largest annual international GLBT civil rights forum. For more information, visit www.equalityforum.com.

Check out the video below, and make sure you come back every day as the video will change and bring you 31 GLBT icon for all 31 days of October!

GLBT History Is American History

“GLBT History Month sends an important message to our nation’s teachers, school boards, community leaders, and youth about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in American history.”

Unless you have been living under a rock, there is a gay rights march in Washington, DC in early October.

“A march,” you ask with indignation. “I didn’t know. Why doesn’t our gay media keep us informed of these important things. God, our gay press has failed again. Why can’t we have gay versions of Walter Cronkite or Don Hewitt?”

Yes, gentle reader there is a rally. Called the National Equality March; go to this site and you will get all the information you need. If you can’t be in DC that weekend, you’ll find suggestions for alternative activities. Between now and October 11, I’ll spend an entry each week reporting about the upcoming rally.
