Radcliffe Speaks OUT

The Harry Potter star, actor Daniel Radcliffe, has long been a gay rights advocate, and with the recent string of suicides, he is speaking out to encourage young people to stand up for gay peers who fall victim to homophobic bullies.

According to a post on Zikker:

The Harry Potter star is a long-standing supporter of The Trevor Project, a non-profit group dedicated to crisis support and suicide prevention for youths questioning sexuality issues, and even filmed a public service announcement (PSA) blasting homophobia earlier this year. Radcliffe was inspired to speak out again after in the wake of the most recent gay teen suicide. Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, 18, jumped off New York’s George Washington Bridge to his death last month after his college roommate allegedly posted footage of him having sex with another man online.

A new survey carried out by Smooch.com reveals that nearly 2 out of 5 people think it is important to have a Gay friend.

With the end of the ‘Noughties’ rapidly approaching, the rise of the gay figures on our screens in the past decade has undoubtedly had an effect on society. It would appear that the success of programmes such as How to Look Good Naked and Will and Grace has prompted a rise in ‘Gayjacents’.

The results show that it was most important to the younger age categories to have a gay friend. 18-24 year olds are twice as likely to rate gay friendships ‘Very Important’ than those aged 41-50. Similarly those aged 25-30 are almost twice as likely to want a gay friend than those aged 36-40. This is arguably a consequence of the increasing diversity in society compared to 15 or 20 years ago.

Unsurprisingly, having a gay friend was 5 time more important to women than it was to men. This trend is undoubtedly influenced by today’s celebrity culture, whether it be Madonna, Kylie or Katie Price, it seems that female celebrities are setting the standard for women everywhere.

Two Potato – Hot Potato

I had thought that the Governor would wait until he had been elected and was safely esconced in Albany for 4 years prior to taking on this hot potato – at least, I read as much last year. Clearly he has taken a calculated risk in coming “out” like this relative to such a highly political issue.

This is great! I saw this on TV over the weekend and am still cracking up about it. This is GREAT humor and a great commercial. I’m not sure who the marketing genius was that came up with this one, but I would most certainly support Quizno’s “gay friendly” appearance over Subways “fire a gay porn star” stance!

This is Gay Country

It’s reasonably safe to say that country music hasn’t been friendly to the gay community (are you listening Big & Rich?), perhaps based in the geographic, religious and conservative roots of the genre. While not homophobic in the same sense as some rap or reggae music as evidenced in those genre’s lyrics, there is an element of homophobia with regards to the people who make and buy country music. The genre does not welcome or encourage gay artists, nor gay fans.

Gavin Newsome the sexiest, STR8, Gay Marriage Advocating Mayor of San Francisco, and bona fide HUNK has been chosen to serve as Political Grand Marshal at the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Parade this year. *swooooon* (Okay I admit I have a BIT of a “crush”)

Newsome is revered by gay-marriage advocates who see him as a civil rights advocate. The San Francisco mayor started the public debate on the issue after 36 days as Mayor in 2003, when he granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The following year, the state Supreme Court annulled the unions. Gavin, if I may call him by his first name, is a Democrat, is expected to run for Governor of CA in 2010.

What Do You Aspire to Be?

What do I aspire to be? A part of the declaration that starts with We…We too are the people of the United States, yet part of this country so many hates.

They carry banners that say we should die, no wonder so many live in a lie. As long as I remember, I have been gay. Yet so many insist, we’re not born this way.

What do I aspire to be? An equal citizen in the land of the free. No harm have I cause to the world or mankind. If you took the time to know me, a good man you would find.

It is not my right, to judge or to hate, yet you think yourself fit, to decide my fate. If I were to die in my sleep tonight, by law my partner would have no right. To decide matters as your spouse would, a right you take for granted, I wish I could.
