It has to seen as another, albeit very important, step in a journey where it is not about the big victories but more about gathering people to walk with us and support us as we walk towards the much bigger goal of marriage equality for all across the country.

Members from the gay activist group Queer Rising chained themselves together in front of the New York marriage bureau. Alan Bounville, Jake Goodman, Justin Elzie and Gabriel Yuri Bollag chained and pad-locked themselves to the railing to the entrance of the marriage bureau. They were subsequently arrested for their disobedience.

More than 20 gay couples attempted to apply for marriage licenses; all were denied. As a result a gay man and lesbian woman applied and were approved for a marriage license. The group then moved outside where the members formed their human barrier.
Spokesperson for the group Spring Super held a press conference in the park adjacent to the bureau stating, “New York City is home to the Stonewall Riots and in that tradition we are here to say that equality doesn’t arrive through the ballot box. The bankrupt strategy of putting all efforts into electing so-called ‘friendly’ officials has failed. We must shift to building a grassroots, national movement that demands full equality by any means necessary. Today, through our symbolic marriage applications, rally and civil disobedience, that message was quite clear.”

I know what you’re thinking after reading the title to this. You’re thinking I’m writing about stimulating the economy and universal healthcare. While I’m all for job growth and better healthcare, that’s not exactly what this article is about. So what am I talking about? I’m
talking about how bent and focused the LGBT community is on marriage equality, when there is still a sector of the LGBT that isn’t even
afforded basic protections for employment, housing and medical care.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy whenever I see any part of our community gain rights and acceptance. But I hesitate whenever I’m asked to participate in an event or a promotion that only benefits marriage. Why? Because we T’s have already been thrown under the bus at least once by the rest of the community and we’re a little weary of it. The phrase “don’t worry, we’ll come back for you” is a little worn out, especially here in NY where typically we have lobbied for three pieces of legislation; marriage, GENDA and Dignity For All Students, but after 15 years GENDA just barely made it through the Assembly.

Attorney General Patrick Lynch and General Treasurer Frank Caprio, the Democrats, and Chafee have been invited to make their promise public at a Statehouse rally scheduled for March 3, said Kathy Kushnir, executive director of Marriage Equality Rhode Island.

Kushnir said Republican candidate John Robitaille has not returned her calls, although Robitaille said he was never contacted by Kushnir’s group. He opposes gay marriage but would consider supporting a domestic partnership system for gay couples.

Gay-right supporters are getting a mixed bag of news this month over the issue of same-sex marriage.

In Virginia, Delegate David Englin, D-Alexandria, wants the Old Dominion State to repeal its constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.

But on Capitol Hill, Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, introduced legislation last week that would allow District of Columbia residents to vote on whether to overturn same-sex marriage.

Englin said the Virginia amendment, which 57 percent of voters approved in 2006, is unfair to gay and lesbian couples. This is the third time he has attempted to get the amendment repealed.

To repeal that amendment, Englin is sponsoring House Joint Resolution 55.

“If we are to take our founding values seriously, where we say that every human being deserves equal treatment under the law, then we cannot enshrine in the Constitution a policy that boils down to nothing but bigotry,” Englin told The Gainesville Times, in an article published online on Feb. 8.

The Judiciary Committee also votes Tuesday whether to support a constitutional amendment banning gay unions. Gay marriage opponents know their chance of success is slim, but they want to keep the issue before voters in hopes Republicans will regain control of the Statehouse from Democrats in November and succeed then in repealing the law.

The House next acts on the recommendations.

New Hampshire became the fifth state to legalize gay marriage on January 1, 2010.

The biggest open secret in the landmark trial over same-sex marriage being heard in San Francisco is that the federal judge who will decide the case, Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, is himself gay.

Many gay politicians in San Francisco and lawyers who have had dealings with Walker say the 65-year-old jurist, appointed to the bench by President George H.W. Bush in 1989, has never taken pains to disguise – or advertise – his orientation.

They also don’t believe it will influence how he rules on the case he’s now hearing – whether Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure approved by state voters to ban same-sex marriage, unconstitutionally discriminates against gays and lesbians.

“There is nothing about Walker as a judge to indicate that his sexual orientation, other than being an interesting factor, will in any way bias his view,” said Kate Kendell, head of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, which is supporting the lawsuit to overturn Prop. 8.

We straight people don’t need help from gays in destroying marriage, having done an admirable job of it ourselves, thank you very much. And the reason that marriages continue to decline in the United States is that rather than discussing how we can shore up this most vital of all social institutions, we have instead chosen to focus on a convenient scapegoat: gays.

The facts are straightforward. Not even 10 percent of the American population is gay, but more than 50% of all marriages end in divorce. And this was happening years before gays came out in significant numbers, let alone demanded the right to marry. In fact, the only men who seem to still want to get married in America are gays. While they are petitioning the Supreme Court to tie the knot, the straight guys are breaking into a rash and running to the hills every time their live-in girlfriends of five years push for a ring on their finger.
