Whether you’re gay or straight, some gay films are noteworthy and should be appreciated by all, regardless of sexuality (except Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin).

So, with that being said, MetroWeekly has compiled a list of 25 must see gay films which includes:

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (1993)

There are times when a film simply needs to be upfront about being didactic — and this dispatch from the early days of the AIDS epidemic is a classic of event-movie didacticism. Adapted from Randy Shilts’s history of the epidemic, And the Band Played On didn’t set out to be a major work of art, unlike its Broadway contemporary, Angels in America. Band was about making the case to America that AIDS mattered — that people who were dying from it mattered, that the hatred unleashed against those who had the disease mattered. The cast reads like a who’s who of Hollywood, including gay and lesbian actors Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin and B.D. Wong. It’s not a triumph of filmmaking — like any fictionalized documentary, it takes some liberties with facts in order create heroes and villains — but it is an essential cinematic moment for gays and lesbians in America. The saddest thing, in retrospect, is how many of the lessons it wanted to teach have yet to be learned.

Well, if that’s you, then you may want to check out BLUD, a blog that provides great reviews for all types of gay entertainment like the following review for “Say My Name”, a gay film.

So today I came across the short British film Say My Name. The short, produced by the creator of the movie Rag Tag focuses on an argument between two characters Chris and Ricky who are in a discreet relationship. Apart from the yardie-ish slang being thick and making the dialogue harder to follow, the movie was a winner. Strong acting, a raw authenticity, I only wish that it lasted longer than 12 minutes!

According to Ramon:

“The Kids Are Alright” was a big winner at the 2011 Globes, still the comedy lost in many ways. Before I go on, let me clear the air. You’re right: “The Kids Are Alright” (TKAA) is a lesbian-themed and lesbian created movie, so we should celebrate another gay click on the mainstream wheel. Still, the movie had to be hetero-normalized to get there. The movie showed more like what straight people think lesbian parenting is; not what people in same-sex relationships actually go through. Let me explain:

There is much in the news at the moment regarding the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, however for one New York University student, it’s more than just a hateful, discriminatory policy, it’s a vision…it’s a film.

“I am extremely passionate about spreading the word on the injustice of Don’t ask, don’t tell, and the cruel rejection and pressure many homosexual Americans face,” Explains Naomi Davis, a senior at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. “I went to lobby for repeal in Washington DC” continues the talents student. “I met the men and women who have been discharged. This policy is disgusting and needs to be gotten rid of, since cinema is a language that I am fluent in, I have decided to fight the best way I know how”

The film starts in the Spring of 2009. Martin Eames returns home from a three month stint in rehab, to find the last person he expects to see: his estranged best friend and ex-comrade, David Stevens. His family hopes that David can help Martin fight his demons, but David brings confusion, personal crisis and most of all the war back into Martin’s recovered life.

Though Martin is drug free, he must still deal with the consequences of his past deeds. He returns home to a father who does not and refuses to understand him, a younger sister who he abandoned and a mother who is afraid to leave him alone. Most of all, he returns to his nightmares, the memories from Iraq that he cannot escape.

Eight months prior, Martin and David fought in Iraq, they were Marines, comrades in arms and lovers deep inside of the closet. It’s difficult for fellow solders to be together under normal circumstances but even harder for those living under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” There’s a lot more to come!

In 1980 William Friedkin’s movie Cruising starring Al Pacino created a firestorm in the gay community. Gays protested the film not only during it’s release but also during filming.

Demonstrators did everything they could to sabotage the filming. There was an unsuccessful attempt to get Friedkin’s location permits in the Village revoked. When that didn’t work, people honked horns and blasted stereos out of windows to interfere with the sound recording. Others sat on rooftops with large reflectors to disrupt the lighting. Regulars of the meat packing district’s leather bars participated in the filming but several of the bars backed out when they saw the script.

What in fact many of those who protested were worried about was once the film was released gay bashings would increase and it would lump all gays into a common stereotype at a time when being gay was far from being accepted by mainstream America.
