It’s not often a voice just stops you dead in you tracks and pricks at your very soul, but that’s what happened to to me when I first heard Jake Walden’s ‘Alive and Screaming’.
It’s hard to categorize his sound, as Jake’s voice has so many textures, from silky smooth to rough-hewn lumber, forever capturing heartfelt emotion. He can take you from cool sheets to a gravel road, never failing to lend a hand to grasp.

There’s a refreshing honestly to the sensitive and emotive lyrics that have that rare ability to truly reach into your mind, into your very soul and transport you to different place. The son of hippies, born and raised in Northern California, he’s already building up a vast fan base, which is just as well, for his next album really does depend upon his friends and fan’s, no really, it does, literally!

Jake has chosen a novel, and some might say brave, or others risky, way to get his new album off the ground with Kickstarter! Now, for those that don’t know, me included, Kickstarter is a different and fun way to fund creativity, it’s a website where singers, writers, artists and other talented people put up projects that need funding, it’s then all about hope! Hope that others deem the project worthy of spending money on, however, as Jason Shaw found out in this exclusive interview with Jake, if the project’s target’s not reached, no money changes hands!

So Jake, first of all, thanks for coming online for this little interview, You’ve got less than 10 days left on your kickstarter project to fund the new album, hows that going?

It’s funny, because of course you never really know. Though the timing seems perfect now, being in true pre-production and full band rehearsals for the album, really we should have tackled this effort much earlier in the year. Thing is, I just didn’t want to launch it until it felt right. I take very seriously what I am asking from people, and I wanted the gifts and pledge levels to feel “me”, to fit in with the theme of the album and to offer my fans/friends creative items or moments that were authentic and worthy in my mind.

And so it is….we need about 20-30K bucks to make and market the record, a bit more to tour it and we are at about 12K with two weeks to go so far. I have all the faith in the world that we will get there. People are so kind and generous and because of the way I feel connected to those who love my music, it is fitting to be able to collaborate both creatively and financially with those whom have invested so much time and energy through these three years with me.

I’m babbling, but it is very validating, very exciting and brings me a sense of real peace about a project that is so life defining, to know it will be made with no compromise, no limits….to present the best of my songs recorded to the best of my abilities to the industry and the world.

Lastly I will say that though the $500 and $1000 pledges are exciting and impactful, really my hope is to get as many people involved and “invested” in the project as possible, even if just to pre-order the album digitally…it all adds up and matters to me.

Has the fact that you’ve already reached your preliminary target surprised you?

Honestly, no, only because I am so tuned into the reality of the people who both follow and interact with what I do. I spent a year on the road, I write every day, I have played hundreds of concerts now and met so many folks on a personal level, so I had an idea in my crazy worried

mind that this was something I could be confident in. That being said, because of how Kickstarter works, where if you don’t reach your goal you get NOTHING, we had to set it at a lower number to make sure we at least got the project going, even though our true goal is two to three times that amount.

What made you decide to do in the first place?

This all started as a personal “journey” that was about the music and the faces of those I was able to touch with the songs. Though I have big dreams for the record once we make it and am open to aligning myself with a label or publishing house if it fits in order to extend the possible reach of the record, my little team and I felt that by doing this part on our own we really could follow our hearts and make the best ART possible. After that, come what may, I will have known I did something without compromise that means something to so many.

Also, originally we were going to make the record with a few large investors, but that led to many of the same issues as a record label, so…here we are…

Yep, here we are indeed, it’s going so well, but there is still time for those that want to to contribute, just visit kickstarter for more details. Now, let me take you back, what drove you into music in the first place?

I have always been an artist, a writer, an actor. Went to college to be a film actor and that’s how I got to L.A. I had always done musical theatre and tinkered on a piano but never really thought about being a singer/songwriter.

Music had always been so important to me, so holy, so larger than life, a dream and I guess I never knew I could do it. That changed the winter my heart was truly broken for the first time and

for some reason I decided to rent a piano (thanks to my Dad who gave me the money to start) and I basically spent about a year, almost two, of my life alone, in the dark, with my bare feet on the floor and the windows open learning to play the piano and getting through the devastation and loss. It was a true life crossroads, and for some reason as I opened my mouth, this voice I never knew existed in me came out, very rough but textured.

Now, having developed my instrument so much further I cringe a little at my early live recordings and demos because they were so guttural and rough. That being said, I would play a show and half the room would be crying at some point, transported to a place that made them feel. I was so raw and alive and wounded and yet as always so hopeful. Somehow the combination ended up defining me and connecting with a lot of people.

From that point on I knew I finally had found my purpose. It sounds kind of dramatic, but hey, I AM kind of dramatic…and so it is…

There is a real authentic, honest, almost tortured hero quality to your voice, that makes it so emotive to listen to. But, Where do you gather your musical influences from?

Easy one. My folks are/were total hippies and I grew up with the songs of Joni Mitchell and Dylan and Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac and SO many others in such a way that it is beyond influence, it is the essence of what I do now as a creator of music. Thing is, I am not them, I don’t live in 1970 and I have my own story, so though they are my heroes and ”inspirations” I know that what I am doing is uniquely me and I am most proud of that.

Authenticity is everything to me…being exactly who WE are is what I try to sing about and to live my life is constant search of.

And now, what artists that are around at the moment do you admire, aspire to be like, or wish they had more success?

I love SO much music. Big fan of Damien Rice, Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams. I love some country music and some pop music. I think though my aspiration is to have the career of what I think is the best female voice I have personally heard live and that is Brandi Carlile. She is brilliant in every way. She has had great success with placing her songs on T.V. and film, she had a great song actually get played on the radio (The Story) and she tours constantly to rooms of 1-3 thousand people. That is the dream. To have longevity, fans you actually know through the years and to have enough visibility to fill a nice sized theatre wherever you go.

I think you’re already on the way to archiving that! Name a couple of people that you’d like to duet with?

Stevie Nicks!!!! Natalie Maines. Brandi Carlile. Adele. Tori Amos.

Talking of duets, you did an amazing cover of a fellow Brit, Leona Lewis Bleeding Love with Bonnie Somerville, which is really so haunting and beautiful, how did that come about?

Bonnie is a nut, one of the most interesting people I know, complicated, beautiful and full of life. She has championed me for a long time and I love that woman. We share the same manager and she called me one day saying ”Let’s do a cover of Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis”…I was kind of hoity toity about it, because it was such a huge pop hit at the time and I don’t know…..doesn’t matter. That night I sat by myself and just kind of figured the song out, realizing it had the most amazing melody, that with my hauntingly beautiful thing I naturally do could be something special.

Then once Bonnie sat beside me and began to harmonize it was one of those moments, those rare ones as an artist where you realize you are a part of, in the presence of something very REAL and very special. My friend came over and we rented a nice microphone, set up pro tools on his computer and recorded it live…well the piano actually and then sang the song in the this little bathroom closet, in the dark of course. It was magic and it set in motion so much for me.

On Youtube here.

It really is an amazing cover version, well done! Do you perhaps have a particular song or songs that you are most proud of?

We Are and For Someone…

We Are because I close every show with it, and now the audience sings along and somehow everything just feels right with the world for a moment.

For Someone because, well, it is the song most people know of mine, the one that came out of me in one breathe and says all the things I guess I really needed to say at that time in my life.

Both are really powerful songs, although speaking of pride, what was it like having two of your songs on TV shows, I’m talking of course, Wide Awake on Cougar Town and Alive and Screaming on Scrubs?

First of all, it was exciting to have something tangible to share with all the people who support me. Also, it has paid my rent a few random and needed months… Danny, who is one of the producers of the show is a true fan and now friend who comes out to a lot of shows here in L.A. I know how much it meant to him to be able to find a way to get my work out there.

So when you are going into the studio?

Next month we will officially record the first note!!

Oh how exciting, on a personal note, do you think that sexuality plays a part in your music?

Honestly, not really. I really don’t identify myself as a “gay artist”. I love that to those it matters to I can be honest and share who I am, but I really try and remain somewhat neutral so as not to take away from what any fan, straight, male or female may imagine when they hear the song. You want to paint the picture with subtle brushstrokes, leave room for personal interpretation and vision. Songs from the heart, from an honest place, in my opinion, will of course have a point of view. But my life and my art are so much more than who I love. I consider myself defined by so many facets of who I am and long to be. I think what I can do to move along the acceptance and rights of gay people is done by people loving what I do simply for who I am as a human, then when they see, oh he is gay, all the sudden they realize they know a gay person for more than their sexuality, more than what makes us different…instead it is what connects us and what we share.

I believe we live in the most exciting of times and I’m proud to be who I am, for ALL of me.

Tragically there has been many gay teen suicides recently, due to bullying, what’s your advice on this?

This question is so hard. I was just talking about Matthew Shepard, about how from such a horrific act so many eyes and hearts were open and so I guess I hope the same for this time, and that these kids lives can not have been lost not in vein.

I truly believe it starts at home though. Kids only hate what they learn to hate because they are inherently good. My advice is for parents to watch what divisive hateful and ignorant things they pass on to their kids.

Most of all, I guess my advice would be to “be you”, and of course, to have enough of us telling them how being different, though lonely and hard at times will ultimately open up the world for them. They are lucky to be different, lucky to be exactly who they are. I’m so fucking sad it was too late for these kids. So sad.

Good advice there, and yes, you are right, It’s so sad, that lives have been lost through, hate, fear, ignorance, or thoughtlessness. There is help available, The Trevor Project does a wonderful job through their website and helpline.

Now, is there a love interest in you personal life, is Jake in love at the moment?

Don’t you want to keep some of the mystery? Haha……I actually am. To the

most special man I know.

Good, glad to hear it, hope it lasts a life time and beyond. Sadly we’ve come to the end of our time, so, just like always, I end my interview with a request for a secret, don’t worry, it’s just between us!

Haha, umm I started getting gray hairs at 20, and now at 30 if I don’t put some sort of color rinse on it once every month or so I have spreckles of grey hair EVERYWHERE.

I HATE coloring it, and everybody always says how much they love it on me and how I still look very very young and it blends in and blah blah blah…I pretend it doesn’t bother me, that I am not that vein….so I smile and say “thanks” but always end up back in that bathroom with that dye on my hair.

Shhhhh…don’t tell anyone. Seriously now, it’s embarrassing.

If you’ve never heard of the English pop group Bloc Party, then you’ve probably not yet heard of the group’s openly gay lead singer, Kele Okereke.

Whether you have or haven’t however, Okereke has lived a very interesting life, growing up in London, in a devout Catholic family originally from Nigeria. He officially came out as gay earlier this year and is not a fan of being interviewed as he’s know to be very shy…however there is an interview that was posted on New York Magazine earlier this month that gives some pretty good insight into the life of seemingly introverted, yet extremely talented out, gay artist.

According to the interview:

You’re focused on being an artist.
It’s not about being a spokesperson or a role model or any of those things. I do this because there’s something I believe in: what I create. I don’t like to think about anything other than that. It keeps it pure for me.

Read the entire interview here!

If you’re part of the LGBT community and you need help getting your book published, movie produced or music promo’ed, then there’s a new website that can give you some help and advice.

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a best selling writer or wondered how you could finance your film or other creative endeavors, da Vinci’s Waking Dream gives you interviews with people who are where you want to be. Not only will you learn about their successes, you’ll also hear about their challenges.

Website publisher and podcast host Will Norman interviews gay and gay-friendly musicians, filmmakers, artists, writers like Amazon best selling author Nick Nolan and award-winning animator and comic book artist Brad Rader. Published every Thursday on the Queers on the Verge website, iTunes podcasts, and other distributor venues, da Vinci’s Waking Dream provides its audience with intimate access to gay professionals.

Guests freely give advice and discuss their latest projects. But listeners come away with so much more since da Vinci’s Waking Dream rises above mere Q&A. You also get to know a little about the person offering advice, which makes listening to the podcast that much more enjoyable. Many times, the guests on da Vinci’s Waking Dream are quite funny, but unlike so many gay podcasts, this show is not striving for humor. Straightforward advice and tips that will help listeners take their dream to the next level is the show’s aim.

One of the perks of da Vinci’s Waking Dream is that you don’t have to be gay to walk away with something from the podcast. All you need is a goal, a receptive ear, and the determination to make your Web 2.0 dreams come true.

Jason Shaw, top blogger from The Seafront Diaries and gayagenda.com‘s UK correspondent managed to secure an exclusive interview with one of the most elusive New York based singer song-writers around at the moment, the highly talented Jay Brannan!

Here, especially for you, the BestGayBlogs.com readers and friends is that special exclusive interview:

Little mermaid on crack, voice of a fallen angel, a modern day twisted torch song singer, the sound of a sad angry woman, all various phrases that have been used to describe the talent that is New York based 28 year old actor, singer, song-writer Jay Brannan. Yet, all of them don’t quite hit the mark, for there is far more to the swoonsome singer than his pretty face, hauntingly beautiful voice and meaningful heartfelt lyrics!.

It’s fair to say this enigmatic boy first rose to the great public awareness when he appeared in the raunchy, provocative, John Cameron Mitchell move ‘Shotbus’ in 2006. A movie so full of erotic and and in your face sex than sadly a great many people didn’t see past that and see the masterpiece it truly is. It “was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever been a part of” Jay tells me, “Being in a movie and having a song on the sound-track, expanded my audience very quickly, on a small, but global scale” He says with fondness, the song he speaks of is the quirky, twinkly and jolly ‘Soda shop’ and that audience, is truly global – fans from as far apart as New Zealand and Iceland. And, it’s an audience that’s steadily growing, over 23,000 fans on Facebook, 37,800 odd on MySpace, a further 14,500 follow his every word on micro-blogging tweeteriffic Twitter and almost an amazing 6,890,000 plays on YouTube.

Those numbers are only likely to get bigger as this talented handsome young man packs up his trusty guitar and hits the road, touring both in North America and Europe. Full list of dates and venues can be found below, but, you’d better act fast, tickets sold out fast last time, leaving a surprisingly large number disappointed and unable to enjoy his emotive far reaching soul pleasing sound.

I caught up with Jay last week, after months and months of trying to gain an interview with the shy entertainer. First of all, I know you usually shy away from doing such interviews, claiming you’re not that interesting, so really Jay, I think you for agreeing to do this one.

Haha, Jason, I don’t ever remember agreeing to do an interview………

Let’s talk about your tour, you are just about to embark on a long list of live dates, what made you decide to tour now?

“Err, isn’t that what musicians do?”

Well, yep, good point, it is what musicians do, although in the commercial pop world it’s all lip syncing and coat hanger smiles! What do you enjoy more, is it the live shows or perhaps the recording or the writing?

“Live shows. Writing and recording are frustrating”

So, for you, what’s the best thing about live shows?

“I just like singing! But it’s cool that I show up in places I’ve never been sometimes, and there’s a room full of people there who came to see me sing! And sometimes they sing along, or request songs by name…that’s always a little surreal.”

Which song is most requested?

“Ummm…I’m not sure. I’m always surprised by which song of mine people tell me they like the best. It’s often not what I would expect.”

So far, Jay’s tour includes a few dates in England and Ireland this autumn, I ask if he’s excited to be coming back this way over the Atlantic.

“Oh of course! I’m very lucky to have the opportunity to tour international. it’s not easy!”

He’s no stranger to Europe, earlier this year he spent a few months travelling around, mostly mainland Europe, even giving a few impromptu open air concerts in city centre parks, much to the delight of the local fans. He’s enthusiastic in his reply to my rather weak and cliche question ‘how was it for you’?’

“It was an amazing experience. Parts of it were awesome, parts of it were horrible. But ultimately I learned so much about myself, and got to see some new parts of the world.”

“For someone as inactive and low energy as me, 3 months abroad is a big challenge hahaha. I grew a lot I think.”

I knew when I was in America for three months, there were certain quintessential ‘English’ things I missed, and I wondered if there was anything you missed most while you were travelling?

“American clothes dryers!!”

No interview with Jay would be complete if we didn’t touch on the movie ‘Shortbus’ whist it may not have achieved the audience it should have, it remains one of my favourite and a rapidly becoming a cult classic. I asked Jay, who played a rather shy and giggly Ceth, if it was an enjoyable experience.

“Yup…….one of the most amazing things I’ve ever been a part of. I was very lucky to be involved in that project and to get to know such incredible people. It was soooo much fun, and meaningful at the same time”

Because of the publicity surrounding it’s original release, as one of the most erotic and explicit movies ever released, I wondered if it had helped or hindered his musical career, and you can tell by his words, he’s brimming with pride about the movie.

“I owe a lot of my “career” to that film. Being in a movie and having a song on the sound-track, expanded my audience very quickly. On a small, but global scale”

“It’s brought me lots of opportunity”

Changing the subject a little and focusing on the music, your songs are so authentic and meaningful, where do you draw your inspiration from?

“My life ! Mostly pain, frustration, fear, anger. Those are the things that drive me to write.

“It’s like my coping mechanism for life. Or like having a tumour in my brain that has to be drained every now and then, or my head will pop. Haha, that’s kind of gross, isn’t it?”

It is kinda gross, but also the perfect analogy for having to get something out, out of your head, to let it flow free, to share it with the world. What comes first, is it the lyrics, or the tune, or does it just flood your mind in one big lump?

“I suck at playing guitar, so I have to write something on guitar first, cuz I cant write a guitar part to match something I’ve already written, after that I hum a tune and start piecing together the melody and the words”

You make it sound easy, do you find it easy to write?

No!! it never comes easy to me. Agonising, even yes……”

I’ve always thought your songs have a deep, meaningful, authentic quality to them, how easy is it for you to be so honest when writing?

“Being honest is one of the few things I’m really good at! Haha that’s not difficult at all”

And, which one of your honest songs are you most proud?

“That depends on the day. Shockingly, I am proud of lots of them. Three years ago I would have told you I thought they were all horrible haha. But the response from other people has allowed me to believe maybe they’re not so bad”

His slightly self effacing personality is all part of the charm and beauty that makes this singer so attractive to his audience, who are a pretty loyal bunch. What’s the best thing about being Jay Brannan I ask, not really expecting a specific answer, but gratitude was the last thing on my mind.

“Haha I don’t know, I’ve been lucky to make a living from music for the past 2 years, and I’ve gotten to travel around the world more than once. I am very grateful for those things”

What’s the worst thing about being Jay Brannan then?

“Probably the emotional & social dysfunction parts haha”

Talking of emotions, are you still single, or has love entered your life? Are you anywhere nearer to becoming that housewife making guacamole?

“I haven’t dated anyone in 8 years!!!”

I wasn’t anticipating such a long absence of date-able men, I’d have thought potential suitors would be lining up round the block for this handsome eligible bachelor, god knows if I’d been a couple of years younger, I’d have been one of them! But, what kind of guys does Jay go for?

“Ummm someone who makes me laugh and who likes me exactly the way i am”

Maybe, he’ll walk in to one of your shows, although I’m quite sure a flutter from those long eyelashes and searching eyes would have quite a few hearts fluttering in the audience you might have to fight ‘em off with a stick. But, apart from this the tour, coming over to Europe, what other plans have you got?

“Trying to figure out how to record my next album, and writing the songs for it. I’d also like to do more acting.”

Our brief time is running out and I wonder if he’d like to leave us with a little bit of Jay Brannan wisdom?

“ummmm…follow your instincts and never let other people tell you who can or cant be, and what you can or cant do with your own life?”

Now, as any of my regular readers will know, I also end an interview with a request for a secret, for example, Jayden Grey told me he secretly likes chic-flicks, Joanna Lumley said she secretly liked chilling out with no make-up and jogging bottoms on and Christopher Dallman confessed that Lindsay Lohan thought he was hot – So Jay, tell us a secret.

“Oh My God! how weird, Lindsay Lohan thought *I* was hot, too!!”

Thanks for the interview Jay, just like I promised, it wasn’t too probing! (we’ll save that for next time!)

Guyanese chart topper Nhojj climbs to the top again with his latest single, “The Gay Warrior Song.” Simultaneously #1 on both CDBaby’s “Reggae” and “Out and Proud” charts.

He continues to establish himself as a fearless artist whose appeal extends to listeners across the musical spectrum.

A gay anthem grabbing the #1 spot on both charts is an unlikely phenomenon—Reggae music has unleashed much homophobia, while Out and Proud music celebrates the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. But it is not the first time for Nhojj. His gay music video “Love” hit the #1 spot on the mainstream MTV Music Top 100 chart earlier this year. And last year BET/Centric congratulated him on being a “a gay history first!”

Born in a tiny harbor town along the north shore of Long Island into a musical family, he father once played drums on Ed Sullivan show, his mom answered Elvis back. Growing up, he lived in a house with three sisters and a brother, his early exposure to music was pretty varied and diverse, yet it was Cyndi Lauper that stole his heart and paved the way for a career of making music. In 2004 this interesting, enigmatic man went pop!

Pumped, preened and perfectly presented SIRPAUL is an interesting artist with a deep expressive voice that’s so well suited to the thumping pop that delights his audience. But, they is way more to this young New York boy, as Howard Stump has been finding out for his blog Soundtrack To My Day and us at Best Gay Blogs.

Who were you listening to as a kid, your early influences?

I have three sisters and one brother and I grew up listening to the music they exposed me to… They each had artists they listened to the most: Madonna, Prince, Stevie Nicks, George Michael, and Van Halen. You can hear all of those elements in my music…But I was OBSESSED with Cyndi Lauper. My entire room was wallpapered with images of her. I had every single piece of memorabilia that was available and I would sit in my room and listen to She’s So Unusual over and over and over! I really felt like she was the only person in the world that I could relate to at the time because she looked crazy and I did too! I was really into the whole “New Wave look” and you could see it in the way I dressed…I was kind of androgynous and had crazy hair colors all the time.

When did you first start making music?

My parents were both musicians. My father was a drummer and he played on the Ed Sullivan Show once with his band and my mother and her sister were a singing duo called Judy & Jo. They signed to Capital Records when they were teenagers and they had put out some records. One of them was an answer song to Elvis’s Good Luck Charm called Don’t Wanna Be Your Good Luck Charm. Their songs were GREAT! So at one point or another we all were encouraged to try our hand at music. My brother Brendan is an amazing guitarist and my sister Lisa totally rocked on the drums. But I always sang, made music and wrote songs. I remember being a little kid and making my own tapes and designing the album covers and forcing my friends to be in “bands” with me. I took it very seriously. Then my sister Cherylyn and I started playing around with a keyboard my parents bought me and we began writing real songs when I was around 12. It was all over from there. We were obsessed! By the time I was 16 we had recorded our first demo tape together as a freestyle/techno group called Double Exposure. We were offered the opportunity to start putting out music in Japan but we didn’t feel like the offer was legit. (Maybe it was the fact that they wanted my sister to pose for Playboy??) My voice was still changing and I had a lot of work to do so it really wasn’t the right time but we thought we were totally gonna be the biggest stars in the world!

How does being a DJ influence you as a singer/songwriter?

Well there’s always been this misconception that i’m a DJ but I’m not. I’ve had a very close friendship with one DJ since the very beginning of my career. In 1998 I recorded my very first album, (the self-titled, out of print CD, SIRPAUL) in my bedroom on a keyboard and I was feeling very ambitious. I had just moved to NYC and I pressed a thousand copies of my album and 200 pieces of vinyl for my first single I Disagree. I remixed the song myself (very well, I must say at the time, considering that I was only working on a basic keyboard, a digital 8 track and one sampler!) and my co-worker at the time was Andreas Anastasis. We had just started hanging out and he was really excited to see what would happen with my singing career. He ran the door at a gay club called Twirlin Chelsea. He told me to come down and bring my vinyl to the club because he knew the DJ. When I got there he grabbed my hand and ran me over to the DJ booth and introduced me to this ridiculously beautiful DJ…DJ Alex Lauterstein. I was so nervous, but Alex was totally cool and we clicked right away. He said he would play my record and my heart just stopped beating for a minute. When I heard my song playing for the first time I think it changed my life forever!! We both loved New Wave (Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Erasure) so I guess that since Alex and I shared an affinity for the same types of music, I was probably tailoring my remixes specifically to appeal to that particular sense of aural aesthetics right from the very beginning.

In your personal life, you have a partner, right? How has that helped you with your music?

Yes. Paul is actually the best thing that ever happened to me. I really have never been in love before so this person coming into my life has really changed everything for me. I believe we are soul mates. Our families have both been amazing at welcoming us both respectively into their lives and rallying around us to support us as a unit. They do not treat us any different than any other couple. We both feel very blessed.

What makes you happier, making your own music, or spinning the music of others?

Nothing makes me happier than making music. I love to play and listen to other peoples music too, but it’s honestly just not the same level of satisfaction. DJ’s make music by combining other peoples music and mixing CD’s together. Producers and artists are creating something out of nothing at all…which feels like magic.

Do you enjoy performing for an audience? Where can a fan catch you performing live?

I love performing live. I’ve had such an overwhelmingly emotional response from fans in the audience at my shows so I’m really curious to see what the response is like when I can actually encourage people to get up and dance! I’m in the very early stages of putting together a show in NYC to coincide with the release of my new album Music & Me. [ It was just announced SIRPAUL will kick off his live shows in

New York City on June 26th at the Triad Theater.

Your first recording, 2003’s Thrust EP, seems to me offered a nod to the late 80s Euro-Electronica of Depeche Mode and Yaz, yet had your own spin. How did you approach your first recording?

My first recording was actually my album SIRPAUL. For that one I basically hid in my bedroom and hoped no one was listening! Lol!! I was working with the absolute basics- a keyboard, a mic, a digital 8 track and one sampler. My second album (the unreleased Sexual.Human.Being) no one ever heard, although I think it was quite good. At that point I had incorporated some acoustic guitar and my songwriting skills were getting better. I was creating more polished, well-crafted Pop songs. By the time I got to Thrust I was working on a computer in my tiny NYC apartment. The Thrust EP was just a sampler of my songs from Switch.Switch was my first REAL album and Thrust was going to be my first REAL single. I wanted Thrust to be a respectful nod to Prince and George Michael but I honestly can never shake that Euro feeling completely out of me so you can hear those influences in anything I record. I had my cousin James come over and help me out with the process of recording the vocals on that song and he helped me get to the that part where I sing in a falsetto. We were totally cracking up during the recording but I’m actually really proud of that song! I think it doesn’t take itself to seriously and it really set the tone for a lot of my future work.

Robotika had a more brooding feel, a bit sparse, almost jazz instrumental in nature. Does the music come easier?

Robotika was an experiment and the birth of my synonymous “alter ego.” I was trying to give myself very specific parameters and rules for the record. No real instruments were allowed. So if you heard a guitar it was totally synthesized. I loved making that album. I really stretched myself artistically and it was a huge relief to not have to feel obligated to reveal so much lyrically! But I don’t think any one particular style or genre of music is easier for me to create. I honestly make music in the most organic way… It kind of just flows out of me and I have absolutely no explanation as to how or what I will create next. If you listen to the track 2001 from Robotika you will hear that I sampled it as the basis for one of the songs from my next release Music & Me (the song Break the Beat (Don’t Stop!) So sometimes I’m starting one idea and finishing it almost 10 years later! When you get to the point where you are sampling yourself you know you have made a LOT of music! LOL!

In 2004, you released the album Switch, a much more pop-flavored outing with influences ranging from Middle Eastern rhythms and acoustic simplicity. What brought that on?

I think Switch was deeply subliminally influenced by what was happening in the world and in my personal life at the time. We were at the war in the Middle East and at the same time I was finding my artistic voice. I thought I could take that influence and let it speak through my music. That album almost never happened because immediately after completing it my apartment was broken into! I was out at the release party for Robotika and a compilation my label was releasing called Very Controversial! When I got home my computer (with all of the music I had ever created) along with my all of my recording equipment was gone! The police told me it was definitely an inside job done by some I had known…I was so devastated that I almost stopped making music. But I felt like without music I had no purpose in my life so I asked every person I had ever given a CD to to please return it to me so that I could put my library back together. I got back every single song except one! The sound quality of some of the songs on Switcharen’t perfect (to me) because they still needed some tweaking and EQ adjustment. Without the master files I couldn’t adjust anything so I had to just compile the songs, press the CD’s and move on.

My first purchase, 2006’s Dismantle, returned to the slightly dark and brooding side, only amped up. There seem to be more rock influences, both in percussion and mood. Vocally, you really stretched yourself, in a good way. Even the videos had a darker feel. Was that something you were trying to do?

Well yes and no…but not really. I think Dismantle was just about taking yourself apart and examining every single aspect of your person and the way you love both yourself and other people differently sometimes. I was just creating and that’s what came out. I did want to add more rock guitars and more Drum & Bass, Techno and Breakbeat elements but it was just what I was feeling like fusing together at the time, sound wise.

The 2007 Do U single seem to go flat out rock at times, with driving beat, but many of the mixes utilized electronica to soften that. What is your favorite version?

I think Do U has a very “Rock” attitude to it, but for me it was the most electronic single I had made to date at the time. Do Uhas a very interesting story behind it… I had “virtually” met French producers Human Body through MySpace. I fell in love with what they were doing with Naomman (who I also “virtually” met through MySpace) at the time and they really liked my sound as well. They sent me an instrumental demo track and I couldn’t stop listening to it! It was the first time I was ever set to write lyrics to and sing on a song that someone else produced so it was very exciting to me. I came up with the hook for Do U while I was out dancing at Mr. Black one night and it just stuck in my head and I knew we had something special there. So I went out to the studio on Long Island and my sister Cherylyn and I finished up the lyrics and I recorded the vocals to what is now the Human Body Original Version. After it was done, I was just so excited about the track that I had to remix it. So I started editing the vocal arrangement and played with very new sounds and that’s how I came up with the Robotika Remix (which is always what I call the versions of songs where I feel like I’ve stretched myself artistically.) I felt that the original version was a little too abstract for the “aurally repressed ears of the US” at the time so the Robotika Single Version wound up being the version we used for the video. But I can’t pick just one… I love them ALL!!

Last year you had Objectified, an electronic collection that is sexually charged, both in rhythms and themes. The videos were also more abstract, with the one for the title song to have almost a layered computer screen feel. Yet vocally, you never step away from the emotional intent of the song. Was that always the intention?

The running theme in all of my work is always the concept of Technology vs. Nature. I just think these two forces are constantly battling to dominate one another. I never get tired of exploring this dynamic and I also feel that I’m always finding new ways to express it. On the album Objectified, I loved creating a pure dance pop album that still had smart lyrics while maintaining a sexy, fun tone. Andreas Anastasis had done the video for Do U and it was my most successful single so far, so when it was time to shoot the next video and Andreas wasn’t available, I really had no idea what I was going to do! The next video needed to be really strong and I had only ever worked with Andreas. His unavailability opened the door for me to work with a new director for the first time. I was put in touch with Mark Odgers and I could tell that immediately after we met, he was the right person to shoot this video and that this was going to be something completely ground breaking and different for me. I feel like visually, this video is really quite an achievement and he did an amazing job.
