This month, IN THE LIFE explores what it means to grow old as a gay person in America – how a generation once at the frontlines of establishing the modern LGBT movement finds, in what should be their golden years, new challenges living life openly gay. IT’S ABOUT TIME highlights the leaders spearheading a national effort to protect the rights of LGBT senior citizens and care for our elders.

AGING IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
According to The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, over 3 million LBGT people are over age 65. While seniors are protected against age-based discrimination by “The Older Americans’ Act,” the lack of LGBT specific protections can drive our pioneers back into the closet when entering long-term care facilities. Disturbed by this trend, some activists and visionaries have taken matters into their own hands by creating safe spaces for our elders.

A CONVERSATION WITH… Jennie Chin Hansen and Michael Adams
AARP President Jennie Chin Hansen and SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders) Executive Director Michael Adams discuss the unique needs of LGBT seniors, and how their organizations build constituencies and communities dedicated to advocating for elders’ rights and quality of life.

REEL TO REEL: Edie and Thea; A Very Long Engagement
After a 42-year courtship, Edie and Thea are finally getting married. This tender documentary memorializes a life-long romance set against a backdrop of cultural change. Directed by Gréta Olafsdóttir and Susan Muska (The Brandon Teena Story), the film draws on a wealth of photographs, creating a touching mosaic of these two women’s lives—a tribute to the enduring power of love.

According to the release:

Following the launch of its new website, gaytravel.com announces the search for its first Gay Travel Guru – a travel enthusiast to city-hop, mingle, and report on the hottest gay destinations in North America. Queer Film Fest

As you are probably aware, when it comes to queer films, some are really good, and others, well…not so great. But, as usual, if it’s a gay film, you’ll watch it anyway, just because.

Paul and Eddie have just begun previews for the new Off-Broadway musical “Adam and Steve Just the Way God Made ‘Em.” Their lives strangely mirror the characters they are playing. Paul is looking for the perfect man and Eddie is dealing with how his sexuality and faith can mix. After yet another disastrous dating experience, Paul has an epiphany. He is done dating and just wants to be a slut like the sexy chorus boys that share his dressing room. Eddie has to tell his parents that he’s gay and is starring in a show that calls the bible the “Breeder’s Informational Book of Living Examples”. Eddie comes out to his family and Paul goes on Manhunt.

While Fox’s Glee has taken off as a prime-time phenomenon solid weekly ratings, massive downloads of the musical comedy’s weekly songs on iTunes, nobody has ridden the wave to stardom faster than Chris Colfer. At just 19, the kid who grew up in Clovis, Calif., a small town near Fresno, has risen to stardom playing Kurt Hummel, one of the few gay characters in prime time. And he can sing. With no professional training, Colfer so impressed Glee creator Ryan Murphy during initial auditions that a character was written specifically for him.

In his first gay press interview, Colfer sat down with Advocate.com to discuss his overnight success, growing up in a small town, and how important it is to be gay in prime time.

If you’ve never watched the Logo Channel or if you have never even heard of the channel, here’s a new reason to do whatever it takes to get it, “Sordid Lives: The Series” I personally, nor the rest of the gang had ever even considered watching it until a recent marathon happened to catch my ear. It’s not something that I ever thought i would watch, but the funny thing is, everyone in the show is in some way like people you more than likely know.
