India Decriminalizes Homosexuality

A petition 8 years in the making finally resulted in the High Court of Delhi legalizing consensual sexual relations between gay couples. This ruling overturned a law, existing for almost 150 years in the Commonwealth country, on the basis that such a prohibition contravened India’s Constitution, protecting the fundamental rights of Indian citizens.

“We have finally entered into the 21st Century” exclaimed Anjali Gopalan, director of the Naz foundation, the gay rights lobby which launched the petition 8 years ago. This petition argued that the archaic law, equating homosexuality to paedophilia and residing with animals, was not only giving justification to rampant police homophobia, but ultimately leading to the vastly increased suicide rate existing amongst the Indian LGBT community.

Homophobia Runs in the Family

A second racy lingerie photo has emerged of Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean – as well as some details about her past that may shed some light on the beauty queen’s well-publicized views against gay marriage.

Prejean’s publicist says Prejean posed for the photos when she was 17 in order to land a modeling job. Prejean herself defended the first image, saying, “I am a Christian, and I am a model … Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos.”

Prejean, whose anti-gay marriage comments during the Miss USA pageant thrust her into the national spotlight, may also have some explaining to do about a series of court documents from her parents’ messy, decade-long divorce proceedings.

The papers, dug up by TMZ.com, show that Prejean’s parents flung a series of homosexual allegations against one another.

In one of the documents, Prejean’s father describes a confrontation he had with her mother in 1996, in which “Ms. Prejean accused me, in front of our daughter, of homosexuality.”

Another excerpt quotes a court-appointed doctor who said “The mother questioned [within hearing of the girls] whether [her father] was a homosexual or had a homosexual roommate.”

The Religious Right’s “Right to Kill”

Focus on the Family, one of the lead religious right groups, published an article yesterday, opposing adding gender, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity to the existing Hate Crimes law that already covers race, religion and national origin.

Under “hate-crimes” laws like H.R. 1913, pastors could be prosecuted for preaching the biblical view of homosexuality. Similar laws have been used to prosecute religious speech in the U.S. at the state level and abroad.

“The homosexual activists’ mantra is no longer tolerance — it’s embrace and promote,” said Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst at Focus on the Family Action. “Anything less will be silenced. Christians must speak up.”

That’s an outright lie. The law covers violent acts. It doe not cover speech. No pastor is going to be prosecuted unless he’s an accessory to murder. And I seriously hope Focus on the Family is not suggesting that their pastors now have the religious right to murder people they disapprove of.

Yesterday, I showed a comment that our friend Peter LaBarbera made about focusing on the supposed unhealthy aspect of being gay: “I think they (young conservatives) feel that they have to do something for these gay unions. We have to bring it back to the behavior, the unhealthiness of the behavior, but also the entire gay agenda . . . ” – Young conservatives misled on homosexual issue

Today in a humorously bad piece, MSM=Disease, he follows the same vein.

With the increasingly combative and hateful tone in public discourse surrounding homosexuality I feel compelled to celebrate the joys of sexuality, my sexuality, more and more often. Heterosexual passions have long been represented in Western Art and there is also a rich, yet less visible, history of homosexual love and sexuality represented in art and I see no reason to shy away from expressions of human relationships that many would rather forget exist or actively work to suppress.

The Vatican is Grotesque

It’s not everyday that the Vatican is called “grotesque” by mainstream publications. But that’s what one of Italy’s largest newspapers, La Stampa, labeled the Vatican. The Pope’s home is attempting to block a non-binding proposed UN resolution calling on governments worldwide to decriminalize homosexuality.

Big Gay Ted is Back in Town

When accused of sexual crimes, politicians and pastors alike tend to flock to a series of set, patterned answers. First, deny everything – and when evidence is put forward, say you might be guilty of something, but everyone’s blowing it all out of proportion. When further evidence surfaces, admit your guilt but say you’re struggling with alcohol. Finally, say you were abused as a child. Do everything you can to shift the blame and search for sympathy.

Ted Haggard took a year off to “reaffirm” his heterosexuality, but it seems he’s following the pattern otherwise. Mr. Haggard is now an insurance salesman and, it seems, a travelling preacher. Among other things, he preaches on how his homosexual dabbling was the result of being abused as a child. Right. Well, maybe it is and maybe it isn’t, but the whole thing seems pretty calculated to me. After all, the idea that homosexuality is the result of child abuse is one of the evangelical right’s favorite fantasies.

Gay Relationships Don’t Work

Statistically, it CAN be said, on average, that gay relationships don’t last as long; especially between two men. Although it is easy to conclude that this is a direct result of their sexual orientation, we require a deeper insight in order to reveal the truth.

Can we conclude, in a similar manner, that couples between different cultures won’t work? Or that partners where parents don’t approve of the relationship might just as well not happen? Can we then blindly say that inter-race coupling or ones that aren’t supported by parent figures aren’t as valid? Or do we need to look at the way society marginalises and what effect that has on these couples?
