James Franco is no stranger to playing gay roles in films which may be one reason why he’s so well suited for his latest upcoming portrayal of Allen Ginsberg in “Howl“. “Howl” is a cinematic drama based on the obscenity trial Ginsberg endured in 1957 after the publication of his poem, Howl (click to read), an eclectic writing with several references to drugs and homosexuality.

Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho helped inspire James Franco to act. So when Franco heard that “probably my favorite director” would helm a movie about Harvey Milk…the first out gay man elected to public office in the U.S., Franco took time away from pursuing his undergrad degree at UCLA (he’s currently getting his M.F.A. in fiction writing at Columbia University) to play Scott Smith, Milk’s (Sean Penn) boyfriend.

Who doesn’t love this guy? He graduated from UCLA last month at the age of 30! He took some English literature courses for years there and you know what good for him! Throughout all the time he spends shooting films, he never forgets about advancing in his education. But because he has graduated he is going to move to New York this September to attend graduate school at NYU!!! OMG *buys plane tickes*. I even got to snag something from him:
