The absolute worst nightmare of diehard defenders of “don’t ask, don’t tell” has become reality: They’re now fighting the Pentagon, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Speaking for myself and myself only, it is my personal belief that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do,” Adm. Mike Mullen said in riveting, military-man eloquent testimony Feb. 2 before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“No matter how I look at this issue,” the chairman of the Joint Chiefs continued, “I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens. For me personally, it comes down to integrity — theirs as individuals and ours as an institution.”

The nation’s highest-ranking military officer concluded: “I also believe that the great young men and women of our military can and would accommodate such a change. I never underestimate their ability to adapt.”

Game over.

Now, of course, the losing team can’t be expected to look at the one-sided score and just walk off the field.

Sen. John McCain — the Arizona Republican who in 2006 said if military leaders ever told him DADT should be repealed “we ought to consider seriously changing it” — peevishly lectured Mullen and the Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who also testified “I fully support” repeal:

“Well, I’m happy to say that we still have a Congress of the United States that would have to pass a law to repeal don’t ask, don’t tell, despite your efforts to repeal it, in many respects by fiat,” McCain told them.

Top McCain adviser Steve Schmidt made a surprisingly ringing endorsement of same-sex marriage in a speech to the Log Cabin Republicans:

It seems to me that denying two consenting adults of the same sex the right to form a lawful union that is protected and respected by the state denies them two of the most basic natural rights affirmed in the preamble of our Declaration of Independence – liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, I believe, gives the argument of same sex marriage proponents its moral force.

A lot of people think that this is just another presidential race, with the winner getting to bring their own particular ideas and policies to the table, but that little else will change. But that’s not true. At least, not for one of the two big-party candidates running.

If John McCain is elected president, he will directly or indirectly subvert or dismantle key elements of this country that have made it great, and we’ll come out of his presidency even worse off than we are now. Here are several reasons why, and hopefully at least one of them will convince you to vote for someone else.

Freddie Mac secretly paid a Republican consulting firm $2 million to kill legislation that would have regulated and trimmed the mortgage finance giant and its sister company, Fannie Mae, three years before the government took control to prevent their collapse.

In the cross hairs of the campaign carried out by DCI of Washington were Republican senators and a regulatory overhaul bill sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. DCI’s chief executive is Doug Goodyear, whom John McCain’s campaign later hired to manage the GOP convention in September.

Freddie Mac’s payments to DCI began shortly after the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee sent Hagel’s bill to the then GOP-run Senate on July 28, 2005. All GOP members of the committee supported it; all Democrats opposed it.

I immediately realized that the McCain/Palin folks were having a little meeting….I sat down at the table next to the group just as they were starting their meeting.

As soon as the last member of their group came in, they prayed. In their prayer they begged that God “deliver the country from the evil socialists” and even prayed that “Obama find God”…

The next person lamented that their whole office was voting for Obama. The McCain/Palin supporters called that person’s co-workers “sinners” and said that they “needed Jesus”. Damn, I’m offended again…

They were all upset that Obama had voted for the bailout. Then, one of them said, “McCain supported it too.” Then they talked about how upset they were about McCain’s proposal to buy mortgages directly from homeowners. One of the gentlemen proclaimed, “McCain sounds like a socialist. You’d think he were a Democrat”….

They talked a little more about how Obama would destroy our country with “free health care” and “gay marriages”.

Powell, who said he has been troubled by the judgments John McCain has displayed during the last few weeks of this campaign (particularly his choice of Governor Sarah Palin as running mate and his lack of clarity on the economy) said his decisions were made in the last months and weeks. He praised Obama’s “steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge and an approach to looking at problems like this and picking a vice president that, I think, is ready to be president on day one. And also, in not just jumping in and changing every day, but showing intellectual vigor. I think that he has a, a definitive way of doing business that would serve us well.

At a Sarah Palin rally, someone called out, “Kill him!” At one of your rallies, someone called out, “Terrorist!” Neither was answered or denounced by you or your running mate, as the crowd laughed and cheered. At your campaign event Wednesday in Bethlehem, Pa., the crowd was seething with hatred for the Democratic nominee – an attitude encouraged in speeches there by you, your running mate, your wife and the local Republican chairman.

Shame!

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

“Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis,” Buckley added. “His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless.
But Buckley made clear he’s not just voting against McCain, praising Obama for his “first-class temperament and first-class intellect.”

he Republicans fight dirty…they take every opportunity to shift the political conversation from substance to frivolity. They don’t want the public to see the huge differences between the two parties. Less than two weeks ago, John McCain mocked Senator Obama’s appearance at a Hollywood fundraiser.

And where do you think John McCain was supposed to be tonight? On Monday it was announced that he himself was coming to Hollywood for a fundraiser charging up to $40,800 a plate. The hypocrisy…

McCain accuses Senator Obama of being a “celebrity” (as if he himself is not one). It’s a bad word only if you’re a Democrat, of course. If you’re a Republican it helps you become… President Reagan, Governor Schwarzenegger, Senator Thompson.
