New Jersey’s state Senate will vote on whether to legalize gay marriage. State Sen. President Richard Codey has scheduled the vote for Thursday. Codey said Tuesday that the people of New Jersey “deserve the right to a formal debate on the Senate floor.”

Gay rights advocates in New Jersey have been pushing for New Jersey to join them quickly.

Gov. Jon Corzine supports the measure. But Chris Christie, who will replace him on Jan. 19, says he would veto it.

A Senate vote was canceled last month because it appeared the measure was going to fail.

If it passes the Senate this week, it would still need the approval of the state Assembly to be sent to Corzine’s desk.

The same-sex marriage bill has cleared a hurdle in New Jersey, passing a state Senate committee by a slim margin. It’s an historic step, but it could be a much tougher battle for the full senate.

Thirteen lawmakers sent bill 1967, a proposal that would let gays marry, out of committee. It is the farthest any bill like this has ever gone.

The path to a full vote to let homosexual couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples came after passionate pleas from conservatives.

The State Senate Judiciary Committee heard six hours of testimony Monday. Then, by a vote of 7-6, approved sending the measure on to the full Senate to vote on Thursday. (today)

Over Thanksgiving weekend, a small group of Democrats circulated a letter calling on Democratic legislators to post, and pass, a marriage equality bill that would give gays and lesbians the same right to marry the rest of us enjoy.

Our goal was to get 100 signatures, which would send a clear message that we expected our legislators to stand up for the values of the Democratic Party and its strong legacy of civil rights.

By the end of the week, 2,500 of the state’s most prominent Democratic activists, including elected officials, consultants, fundraisers, campaign operatives, staffers and grassroots supporters, signed on to our letter. In all my years in politics, I cannot recall another time when so many came together to support a single issue.

This group represents the backbone of the Democratic Party and our message to legislators is clear: we will have your back when you do the right thing and support marriage equality. Most of us have dedicated our careers to getting Democrats elected to public office and we would never do anything to undermine our party and its elected officials. It is precisely because we believe that there are no negative political consequences to supporting this very basic civil right that we are urging this course of action.

Two states are expected to decide on whether to grant gay couples the right to marry before the end of the year. But gay marriage proponents are thoroughly sanguine about the District of Columbia, where passage of Council member David Catania’s gay marriage bill is expected to win approval on December 1.

Enthusiasm for gay marriage appears to be on the wane in New York and New Jersey after Mainers repealed a gay marriage law approved by lawmakers in the spring. Numerous New Jersey Democratic senators have expressed concern that now is not the time, while the New York Senate continues to delay action on a bill.

But the political consensus driving gay marriage in the District endures despite numerous attacks. City leaders have remained united on the bill, which is expected to win approval along a 10 to 2 vote at Tuesday’s meeting.

Looks like marriage in New Jersey is a no go. There was talk that Democrats, who run both houses of the Legislature, were going to compose a bill for lame duck Gov. Jon S. Corzine to sign; he said a gay marriage bill would get his John Hancock. Well those Democrats are now making the “maybe it’s not time” argument and if not now don’t expect much in the future. The Garden State’s new governor, Christopher J. Christie, has made it clear he’s not for the institution.

Predictably gays in New Jersey are feeling funky.

“If the Democrats don’t enact marriage equality now, after years of telling us to wait, wait, wait, it will cause a huge schism between the state Democratic Party and not just the gay community, but the entire progressive base,” said Steven Goldstein, head of Garden State Equality. “And it could change the political landscape of New Jersey permanently.”
