Portia De Rossi on Anorexia

There were tears before tea time this week on the Oprah show today, as actress Portia De Rossi told how at one stage she dropped to 82 pounds during the battle she had with anorexia at the height of her fame on hit TV show Ally McBeal.

The a deeply personal and emotional hour flew by as the incredibly pretty Portia read extracts from her new book “Unbearable Lightness” and told honest truths on how she succumbed to the eating disorder which could so easily have taken her life.

There were heart achingly moments when she told Oprah about the times she restricted her daily intake to just 300 calories, or how she managed to survived on a little yoghurt, then there was a nightmare story of how she purged on chewing gum, before a madcap exercise craze in a Hollywood parking lot.

However, it wasn’t all sad, oh no, there were a few moments when the tears that fell were the tears of joy! Yes, especially when Portia told Oprah of her deep pure love for her wife, the other American chat show queen – Ellen DeGeneres! She also told how that deep emotion keeps her sane and saves her each and every day, as well as feeling complete when she legally took Ellen’s last name.

It was a deeply moving insight into the life of a very talented actress, that had me in tears. I can’t wait to get her book – “Unbearable Lightness”

Get it Right Gurl!

Yes, Oprah is the Queen of talk shows and she has accomplished many great things and helped an overwhelming amount of people in her life. But in her quest to tackle all subjects, perhaps due to misinformation, there has been a couple occasions where she has done more damage than good.

One such example is during a recent episode where she featured a Black woman who became infected with HIV by her “Down Low” husband. The show was eerily similar to a 2004 broadcast featuring J.L. King that spread mass hysteria amongst Black women nation wide, instilling the unfounded fear that “all” Black men were on the D.L.

But this show hasn’t gone unnoticed and some, who are more than qualified to do so, are speaking out.

According to a post on Living Out Loud with Darian, Dr. David Malebranche, M.D. is one of those people.

To be quite clear, I wasn’t horrified or disgusted by the fact that this unfortunate Black woman had contracted HIV as a result of her husband’s secretive “Down Low” infidelities with other men. As a Black gay male, physician and public health advocate who has dedicated the past 12 years of my life to the behavioral prevention and treatment of HIV in the Black community, I have heard stories like your guest’s on this day more times than I would like to admit. To the contrary, the acidic taste of bile that coated the back of my throat as I heard her story was in response to the superficial and sensationalistic manner in which you handled the topic, and how it was apparent that you and your staff have learned absolutely nothing in the 6 years since you originally interviewed J.L. King on your “Down Low” episode in 2004.

Ellen on Oprah

Monday, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi appeared on Oprah and spoke about her life, career and marriage. As a huge advocate for everyone coming out at work, regardless of consequence, one thing she says, which I absolutely love; “I knew if I came out there was a possibility I would lose my career, but I didn’t do it for my career, I did it for me to live in my truth.”

According to Rev. Bacon, who recently appeared on the “Oprah” show and stated that being gay, as we are born that way, is a “gift from God”, Received quite a bit of feedback. Even though there was a great deal of positive feedback, in fact, according to Rev. Bacon, the positive outweighed the negative 30-1, there was a certain degree of negative backlash.
