Gay is not the New Black

If you are African American and gay, and fighting alongside your white brothers and sisters for queer civil rights, the notion that “Gay is the new black” is not only absurdly arrogant, it is also dangerously divisive.

In a presumably “post-racial” era with the country’s first African American president-elect, it’s easy for some to assume that race doesn’t matter.

But when critiquing the dominant white gay community’s ongoing efforts to gain marriage equality and its treatment of blacks as their second-class allies in the struggle a reality check happens — both straight and queer African American communities bond together against their strategy for marriage equality.

Why?

Because race does matter!

Rosanne Barr Sounds Off on Prop 8

As they overwhelmingly supported America’s first chance to elect a person of color and strike a death blow to racism, they also went out of their way to misuse their votes. They misused votes (no doubt at the behest of their immoral and hateful pastors and clergy) to isolate and punish a small minority of citizens, and to deny them basic civil rights.

They voted to deny over 70,000 californian children coverage of the insurance benefits of their gay parents. They voted to destroy the constitution that Obama will hopefully uphold against their wishes, by making sure that church and state remain separated. They voted to “uphold the sanctity of marriage” by making a mockery of it.

They showed themselves every inch as bigoted and ignorant as their white christian right wing counterpartners who voted for mccain-palin and bush-cheney.

Regardless of how you feel about marriage, it’s wrong to treat people differently under the law. Enough with these petty political games. This is serious business. Let’s shelve the theatrics, and think about what would be best for all Californians. The answer begins with equal rights for everyone and a No vote on Proposition 8. Asinine Arguments Against Gay Marriage

In California, there is a proposition (8) on the November election ballot to amend the California state constitution, stating marriage will only be recognized between a man and woman. This proposition is an effort to overturn the four California supreme court judges that overturned proposition 22 as unconstitutional. This allowed gays to wed in the state of California (A right my mother and her partner of 25 years exercised this past September).

First, the supporter of proposition 8 (prop. use some of the most asinine arguments for the passing of this law. They argue that a, “constitutional amendment will restore the definition of marriage to what the vast majority of California voters already approved and human history has understood marriage to be.” Yet the U.S. Constitution and the California Constitution both say, “(Law) prohibits discrimination against anyone based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation,” Isn’t Prop. 8 doing exactly that? Discriminating against sexual orientation?

The Declaration of Independence state we are all born with certain unalienable rights, “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” Isn’t marriage the pursuit of happiness? Shouldn’t the state constitution guarantee the same freedoms and rights for all it’s citizens? Denying gay marriage is singling out a specific group and treating them differently. How is that right?

No On Prop 8

Prop 8 would re-write our California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California — denying gays and lesbians the respect, dignity and responsibility that come with marriage.

The ”Vote No on Prop 8, Equality for All” campaign urges you to vigorously oppose this initiative by voting No on 8 on November 4th.

There are so many reasons Prop 8 is wrong for California. Denying a specific group of people access to the same freedoms and rights others enjoy is, quite simply, un-Californian.

Feinstein Backs Gay Marriage

Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has come out against Proposition 8 which would eliminate marriage equality in the state.

“As a state, I believe we should uphold the ability of our friends, neighbors and co-workers who are gay and lesbian to enter into the contract of marriage,” she said.”

Fran’s Fight for Gay Marriage

Fran Drescher doesn’t only support gay marriage, she’s doing something about it. No, she’s not getting married to a woman! The former Nanny star cohosted a cocktail party Wednesday night. She, along with her ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, hosted the party which benefits go to Equality California’s fight to defeat Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California.

Threats of Marriage

How does my marriage threaten you? What if they protested straight marriage? Folks take a stand against men and women who want to love other men and women. They say “Preserve sanctity.” Why not preserve hope, love, charity, good will, peace, understanding, forgiveness, and tolerance? How man’s chapel doors have the same key as the courts of divorce, domestic violence, broken hearts, broken dreams, annulments and family division?
