According to a post on Reality Happens:

Today, I came across an article regarding Chick Fil-A in the online Oakland Press, it was a brief synopsis of an actual CNN article that talked about whether the company was against gay rights and the trouble it will face as it tries to expand outside of the extremely religious South.

But what was more interesting, was one of the posted comments from a reader calling herself “Katie F”. Ms. “F” copied and pasted an article from what appears to be an extremely conservative and deeply religious blog called the NewAmerican (she only quoted and did not list the article’s source – I had to dig, especially since she incorrectly spelled the author’s name, but I found it in spite of that).

According to a Time blog:

None of this can be easy for America’s 2.5 million Muslims, who have had a hard enough time since Sept., 2001. But if nothing else, they can at least remind themselves they’re not alone. In 2008 and 2006, it was illegal immigrants who emerged as the election cycles’ designated bad guys. In 2004, it was gays and lesbians — specifically, gays and lesbians who wanted to get married. In that cycle alone, 11 states passed anti-gay marriage amendments, bringing like-minded voters to the polls who picked like-minded candidates.

But some good news, according to a new poll by the Public Religion Research Institute, a large majority of Americans think religious institutions are doing a pretty poor job of dealing with LGBT issues.

According to the PRRI website:

Regardless of their own religious views on the issue, few Americans believe that places of worship are doing a good job handling the issue of homosexuality. The PRRI/RNS Religion News Poll, conducted by Public Religion Research Institute in partnership with Religion News Service, found that more than 4-in-10 Americans gave religious organizations a “D” (18%) or an “F” (24%). The number of Americans giving places of worship low marks is more than twice as many as give them high marks; Only 5% of Americans give them an “A,” and only 11% give them a “B.”

However, the fact is David Barton, a self-proclaimed historian, is anything but. Of course to those who want to make America a Theocracy have never concerned themselves with facts, so why should they now?

According to a post by Michele Goldberg on Tablet Magazine:

I just finished reading a post at RH Reality Check that talks about how the religious right and their ‘moral’ crusade against stem cell research is actually undermining progress that could potentially save thousands of lives.According to the post:

The lawsuit leading to the injunction involves a serious moral issue that the Religious Right has seized upon as part of its crusade against women’s reproductive rights and dedication to establishing its interpretation of Christianity in law: namely, the status of embryos that are the source of stem cells used for research. Halting this research shows great regard for embryos – but not the millions of people with incurable conditions including diabetes and Parkinson’s who could benefit from this research.

As I mentioned before, I find it extremely interesting how the religious right seems more concerned with the lives of the unborn than they do with the living. They’re quick to talk about the right to life for the unborn, but what about those who are already alive on this earth? Even if they’re not gay, do they not count?

The embryos that would be used in stem cell research aren’t living beings. They don’t have limbs or organs. In fact, they’re slated to be destroyed. Yet because they feel that embryo could possible be used to create a new life, they shouldn’t be used to save the lives of others. But a fallacy in their argument also lies in the opposition the religious right has to artificial insemination. So I always wonder, what’s the point? Seriously, what is the true crux of the opposition?

But, I’m not surprised by this seemingly meaningless opposition to stem cell research. Looking back through history, whenever we look at progress, social or scientific, there’s been one common denominator in the resistance to progress…The religious right.

Whether it be modern medicine, Civil Rights, a woman’s right to vote or gay rights, the religious right has stood front and center acting as barricade, blocking progress which has made this a better nation. If you think about it, all the things the religious right has refused to embrace, and thus attempted to thwart, have turned out to be beneficially to our society as a whole.

When I was a child, my grandmother used to tell me the importance of learning and growing. She would always use the analogy that when a plant stopped growing, it would simply die. I think that holds true for all things on this earth, progress included.

This is why there needs to be separation between church and state. We can’t allow progress to be halted because someone believes an unused embryo has rights that a living person doesn’t. Please write your congressman today and claim your support for stem cell research. One day your life may depend on it.
