According to a post on gayagenda.com:

Unfortunately, Americans don’t learn from the past and they shape and reshape history like a lump of clay to see it as they want to see it, which has done nothing other than prevent progress and has taken America from a nation of leaders to a nation of quivering followers…sheep who would rather grow fields of hate and starve than embrace diversity and feast.

So in the meantime, those of us who don’t fit so neatly into the box of the ‘ideal’ American (White, Christian and straight) are the ones who truly have the most to fear, but are forced into confronting those fears every single day as we fight for equality…something, even though unrecognized by those on the right, makes us much stronger and better than those who use fear to discriminate.

There’s a great post by Alvin McEwen on his blog Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters that does a great job of pointing out just how stupid it’s become.

According to the post:

And if Focus on the Family and these other religious right groups even cared about “family” or “reality,” they would support all family units, not just the one they think are superior.

One would think that an organization with the word “family” in its name would be more concerned with doing this rather than trying to create a caste system.

(What’s her daughter’s name? Melissa?)It looks like the Sarah and Bristol Palin are following suit. What? You don’t think Sarah Palin is a celebrity? Well, Let’s see, she earns $100,000 per speaking engagement. She’s slated to soon to have her own TV show. She’s never passed up the opportunity to speak, even about things she obviously knows nothing about (politics) and takes all the press coverage she can get. Yup, sounds like a celebrity to me.

It would also appear that Bristol is getting to ride the coat-tails of her mother just like other celebrities have followed in the footsteps of their parents, just like Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn, but not nearly as cute.

According to a post on Gay Rights – Change.org:

Bristol Palin is charging anywhere from $15,000-$30,000 for each speaking engagement. And she’s working on a book, too. Lovely.

Yup, it looks like yet another Palin is gonna get paid to talk about something she obviously knows nothing about…Abstinence!

I suppose when you step back and look at the grand scheme, or big picture, it would appear that the struggle for LGBT equality, although not fast enough for some, has made a great deal of progress.

According to an article on the Huffinton Post:

Changing hearts and minds is difficult, and it is actually quite remarkable how much our society has already changed in realizing the equality of LGBT people. This is a testament to the courage of every gay person who has come out and lived in a way that compelled the dominant culture to see his or her humanity. It is also proof of the capacity of human beings to grow and develop through ongoing difficult conversations and encounters that address the real but unfounded fears of people not so different from each other, that shed light on beliefs that have no basis in fact, and that share people’s genuine pain of exclusion.

If you thought that decisions made by the Texas State Board of Education don’t affect you, think again.

Led by far-right ideologues, the Texas SBOE recently gave preliminary approval to a plan that would radically change what children across the country learn in history class.

The ultra-conservative majority on the board (none of whom are experts in any academic discipline and many of whom are explicitly anti-science) took the curricula proposed by teachers and made more than 100 changes to “correct” the perceived left-wing bias.

But it gets worse. Since Texas is one of the largest textbook markets in the country, material written to carter to the Texas curricula will find its way into textbooks across the country unless textbook publishers take a stand.

The universe is out of whack. How else can one explain that our President’s black? As anyone who watches disaster movies can deduce, A black President means that soon all Hell’s gonna break loose.

Of course, the most recent blockbuster drama, is the one starring President Obama.

But in a galaxy far, far away, Republicans have created their very own “Real USA.”

In that happy parallel universe, the President is still white. There are a few minorities around, but they’re very polite.

Nothing bad ever happens (at least nothing their fault). We’re a White Christian Nation again, at least by default.

Women stay home and nobody’s gay. The streets are safe for children to play.

There’s still some crime left, but it doesn’t matter, because it’s not in the parts of the country that matter.

People only do wholesome things for fun, and everybody owns (and carries) a gun.

Removal of aliens and most minorities has been completed, So the police are no longer needed.

There’s no sex education in school, abstinence Only is the rule.

Birth control and abortion are not allowed, because neither are necessary (at least that’s what’s avowed).

Read more at: Newsericks: News Limericks, a tongue-in-cheek rhyming account of the daily news (admittedly with a liberal bias).

It’s simply fascinating to watch the fair weather allegiances within the anti-gay side. During campaigns like Maine’s recent “yes on 1″ effort, the “mainstream” groups like Focus on the Family and the National Organization For Marriage deliberately (and wisely, for their purposes) push outspoken activists like Mike Heath, Pete LaBarbera, and Brian Camenker to the outskirts, with the “official” campaigners/financiers acting as if they themselves know that some of their team’s prominent players are too unabashed to ever help their fallacious campaigns. But in between election season, all is forgiven. When less independents are watching and the need to look moderate is of less concern, the “mainstreamers” routinely rely on the laser-beam focus and admittedly diligent research of the same set of activists that they’d relegated to the “fringe” pile just a few weeks earlier.

Those on the far-right totally recognize this popularity roller coaster for what it is. Frustration with the situation is exactly why Peter LaBarbera and Brian Camenker held a rogue “yes on 1″ presser after weeks of being denied by the Maine campaign. It’s why Maine’s most prominent anti-gay for the past many years, Mike Heath, wrote a blog post acknowledging the forced campaign exile that we had perceived months before. It’s also why Linda Harvey wrote a piece rebuking Stand For Marriage Maine for being so quick to throw the more anti-gay (read: unfiltered and therefore more truthful) voices under the proverbial bus. And it’s exactly why some of those on the far-right have written yours truly and confirmed my spot-on insight on this topic, and why some “pro-family” moderates have issued off-record comments that are not as much denials as they are justifications.

What does the anti-gay rhetoric coming out of forces who fight gay marriage say to LGBT kids? It’s an excellent question. We see anti-gay leaders in Maine saying that same-sex marriage will pollute public schools and teach children immorality. We see anti-gay activists in Washington saying that domestic partnerships will threaten the family and force children to learn about debauchery. We see crazy bishops in D.C. blast same-sex marriage as something detrimental to children in the District. What do all of these messages combined tell LGBT kids? According to Patrick James over at GOOD Magazine, it reinforces negative stereotypes that could leave gay kids feeling isolated, alone, and unable to strive for some very basic things — a long-term relationship, kids, a family, etc. It also reinforces the 1950s narrative that anyone with an L, G, B or T describing their sexual orientation can’t be virtuous — a terribly destructive message to be sending to a 12-year-old.

I think John McCain would have been worse. How about this? I think John McCain would have been worse for the country than Barack Obama. How’s that?Beck is causing consternation for many right wingers these days. Peter Wehner, a former political adviser to President Bush, recently wrote that Beck is “harmful to the conservative movement” because he’s “erratic,” “bizarre,” and is too interested in “conspiracy theories.” And Rush Limbaugh recently suggested to Politico that Beck’s role in promoting the 9/12 protest was “cheap and disingenuous.”
