It would appear that mainstream media, which typically makes mountains out of molehills, is keeping peculiarly quiet over former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman’s decision to come out of the closet.According to a post on the Christian Science Monitor:

Republican leader Ken Mehlman’s announcement that he is gay may have come as a surprise to some of the party faithful, but, in keeping with usual journalistic practices, the mainstream media’s coverage has been subdued.

Tell Texas No!

The HRC has a petition they would like you to sign, sending a message to the GOP head, Michael Steele to denounce the crazy antics of the Texas GOP!

The Texas GOP has put forth a 2010 party platform that includes the following planks:

Gay people shouldn’t have custody of children.
Issuing a marriage license or performing a marriage ceremony for a same-sex couple should be punishable by jail time.
19th-century Texas statutes outlawing sex between men should be restored.
Homosexuality “tears at the fabric of society.”

The national Republican party has yet to distance itself from this hateful rhetoric.

Does the Texas Republican Party speak for the RNC? If not, Michael Steele had better say so.

DelCo: Being Michael Steele

There’s a great commentary on Deleware County Daily Times that brings out some important highlights of how Michael Steele is, as they put it, “The Gift That Keeps on Giving” to those up us that aren’t embraced by the Republican party.

According to the post:

He’s infuriated anti-abortionists, calling the procedure “an individual right” and opposing a Constitutional amendment to it. He’s ticked off the anti-gay religious right with this statement on homosexuality: “I think that there’s a whole lot that goes into the makeup of an individual that, uh, you just can’t simply say, oh, like, ‘Tomorrow morning I’m gonna stop being gay.’ It’s like saying, ‘Tomorrow morning I’m gonna stop being black.’” He even insulted the GOP’s grand-poo-bah of talk, Rush Limbaugh, calling him “an entertainer” who is sometimes “incendiary” and “ugly.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: Yes, but we’ve seen millions and millions of jobs going away in the private sector just in the last year.

STEELE: But they come — yes, they — and they come back, though, George. That’s the point. When they go — they’ve gone away before, and they come back.

In a way, you’re right, Mr. Steele. Government jobs do end. They have a contract date. Meanwhile, you’re still a jackass. See, my dad is an architect. He lost his job because no one is building anything. Because of this, Mama had to pick up a second job as a grocery cashier, which she is actually enjoying (I love my mom ) but so that they can pay the bills.

The new Republican National Committee chairman has said that he would like to make the party more inclusive for Republican voters and candidates. He said they will achieve this with more moderate views, including those who favor GLBT equality and abortion.

Gay Loving Republicans

This morning’s New York Times has the fascinating results of a poll of the views of Republican National Convention delegates on a variety of issues. The poll reveals that 49% of the GOP delegates support either gay marriage (6%) or civil unions (43%). Only 46% of the delegates believe there should be no legal recognition whatsoever of same-sex couples.

Joe Lie-berman Speaks

I only caught about the last 10 minutes of Joe Lieberman’s speech at the Republican National Convention. In the part I did see, I heard a lot of misinformation, heard an ideology that scares the hell out of me, and heard a bitterness of one who feels they’ve been disenfranchised. Coming to St. Paul for the Republican convention? There was a pause, as if Jacob Reitan was pondering whether the question was serious. “No, don’t believe we’ll be making it to St. Paul,” Reitan finally answered. Reitan, a 26-year-old Mankato West High grad and a Harvard master’s student (theological studies) is taking time off from his studies to work for the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund as well as LGBT for Obama He was in Denver for the Democratic National Convention to further the cause for both organizations.
