Whether you’re gay or straight, some gay films are noteworthy and should be appreciated by all, regardless of sexuality (except Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin).

So, with that being said, MetroWeekly has compiled a list of 25 must see gay films which includes:

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (1993)

There are times when a film simply needs to be upfront about being didactic — and this dispatch from the early days of the AIDS epidemic is a classic of event-movie didacticism. Adapted from Randy Shilts’s history of the epidemic, And the Band Played On didn’t set out to be a major work of art, unlike its Broadway contemporary, Angels in America. Band was about making the case to America that AIDS mattered — that people who were dying from it mattered, that the hatred unleashed against those who had the disease mattered. The cast reads like a who’s who of Hollywood, including gay and lesbian actors Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin and B.D. Wong. It’s not a triumph of filmmaking — like any fictionalized documentary, it takes some liberties with facts in order create heroes and villains — but it is an essential cinematic moment for gays and lesbians in America. The saddest thing, in retrospect, is how many of the lessons it wanted to teach have yet to be learned.

Perhaps that’s why Sarah Palin is getting love from Tammy Bruce, a pro-choice, lesbian?

According to a post on Slate.com:

Bruce makes an unlikely Palin attack dog: She is a Democratic apostate and self-described radical feminist whose name first made headlines in the early 1980s, when, at the age of 19, her ex-girlfriend (and employer), Days of Our Lives actress Brenda Benet, killed herself just weeks after their breakup. Bruce subsequently got involved in the women’s movement, counterprotesting against pro-life activists outside abortion clinics, and, in 1990, became president of the National Organization for Women’s Los Angeles chapter.

I think it’s only natural that those of us in the LGBT community hope to see those who oppose us change their minds and become accepting.

Of course, to expect everyone to do so is unrealistic at best but every once in a while we get a glimmer of hope like the one pointed out about Sarah Palin’s position on the repeal of ‘don’t ask don’t tell’. The thing about Palin is though, I can’t help but to think that it’s not so much that she’s had a change of heart as it is I think she’s starting to recognize the detriment of being on the wrong side of history.

According to Change.org Gay Rights:

Palin seems to be changing her tune, by retweeting conservative lesbian blogger Tammy Bruce’s assertion about Owen Honors, the naval captain suspended for directing anti-gay videos with and for his soldiers: “This hypocrisy is just truly too much. Enuf already — the more someone complains about the homos the more we should look under their bed.” The message was clear: homophobia’s dangerous and DADT deserved repeal.

According to a post on TPM:

The scary part, some of the GOP front runners aren’t any better and are just as, if not more homophobic. Find out more at: TPM!

Well, actually we do, but let’s face it, it could be worse as there are places where the type of ignorance that comes from such evil forces is actually embedded into laws that seek to imprison LGBT peoples.

According to a post on newKerala.com, Kenya is one of those places and their PM is the ring leader.

Odinga called on police forces to arrest anyone found engaged in homosexual practices and take ‘appropriate’ legal action against them.

“We will not tolerate such behaviors in the country,” Odinga said at a public rally in the Kamukunji area of his Kibera constituency in Nairobi. “The constitution is very clear on this issue and men or women found engaging in homosexuality will not be spared.”

It’s pretty easy to let politics consume us as this is a very tumultuous time for members of the LGBT community. Our struggle for equality has elevated to the highest plane it’s yet to be on and the opposition has risen to the occasion as well.

But with all the negativity aimed at the LGBT community for simply wanted to be respected as a equal citizen, it’s great to have that light-hearted yet serious enough news about support for the LGBT community.

Hence, today’s story about Tina Fey’s recent winning of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor for her parodies of Sarah Palin on SNL as found on Yahoo News which states:

“I would be a liar and an idiot if I didn’t thank Sarah Palin for helping me get here tonight,” Fey said. “My partial resemblance and her crazy voice are the two luckiest things that have ever happened to me.”

But it wasn’t all fun and humor as Fey also remarked:

Fey wasn’t so complimentary, however, about the sudden increase of conservative women politicians. Fey said the surge is a positive thing for women “unless you don’t want to pay for your own rape kit . . . unless you’re a lesbian who wants to get married to your partner of 20 years . . . [or] unless you believe in evolution.”

It looks as though Sarah Palin is keeping within her family tradition of doing things on TV they simply don’t do well.

First, running for VP…a television catastrophe where you can’t help but to remember how amazing ignorant she sounded as she attempted to answer rather simple questions like “What’s your opinion of the Bush Doctrine?” or “What papers do you read?”

Next there’s FOX News, where although she fits in with the rest of the cast on that sitcom, again, it’s painfully obvious she’s simply rambling about things she knows nothing about and as long as she throws in the occasional “Hussein”, “Socialism” or other anti-Obama rhetoric she’s well received by her audience of Republican sheep who think God should rule America and keep the gays from being married.

Then let’s not forget how her daughter “the activist” Bristol has taken the stage by storm (and gorilla suite) on Dancing with the Stars (again keeping with the family tradition as she’s not a star and she certainly can’t dance).

But now we get a sneak peak into Sarah hosting a wilderness show on TLC about Alaska. Now I won’t say she knows nothing about Alaska, as she certainly knows they have gay books in Wasilla’s library and that she can see Russia from her back porch, but I have to say, this video doesn’t lend to the thought that Sarah is any type of wilderness expert.

But here it is, your entertainment for the day, a sneak peak of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”, which will begin airing on TLC Tonight, November 14th as an eight-week travelogue.

According to a post on the New York Times:

Hoping to overshadow last month’s large rally led by Glenn Beck that drew many Tea Party advocates and other conservatives, a coalition of liberal groups plan to descend on Washington on Saturday to make the case that they, and not the ascendant right, speak for America’s embattled middle class.

Predicting a crowd of more than 100,000, some 300 liberal groups — including the N.A.A.C.P., the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the National Council of La Raza and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force — are sponsoring a march on Saturday in the hope of transforming the national conversation so it focuses less on the Tea Party.
