Hawaii Under Attack

BTB: Getting SMUG

Frank Mugisha, a Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) spokesperson, will appear at several public events in New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C. this month.

He will be there to explain the connection between U.S. conservative religious forces and increased harassment of LGBT people in Uganda .

Mr. Mugisha is visiting the United States to publicize the crisis in LGBT human rights in Uganda. Conservative religious leaders from the United States have targeted African nations such as Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria as anti-gay arenas where they can encourage support of homophobic sentiment at home. African LGBT people have suffered discrimination in the form of “collateral damage” from these campaigns. While it is already illegal to be a homosexual in Uganda, pending legislation would make it punishable even to know an LGBT person and not to report them to the authorities.

Hopefully now, instead of only receiving support from the anti-gay crusaders of America including Scott Lively and Rick Warren, LGBT Ugandans will find some real support and assistance in changing attitudes to bring the country closer to being accepting of the LGBT community.

Praying with the KKK?

Would President Obama speak at a prayer breakfast organized by the KKK? Would Jim Wallis and other “progressive” Christians attend?

Then what will they be doing on Thursday Feb 3 at the National Prayer Breakfast founded and sponsored by the notorious gay-bashing “The Family” fringe far right group? (I ask this as a practicing progressive Christian and repentant former religious right leader).

Yes, that’s the same folks who’s key members here and in Africa are mired in the Uganda kill the gays legislation!

Yes, that’s the same folks who long ago used their US government/hard right contacts to try and get the US Government to cozy up to fascist dictator-for-life Franco of Spain.

Yes, that’s the “C-Street” adulterers club in Wash DC that coddles far right philandering Republicans and protects them when they cheat on their wives, not to mention on their country by using their senator and congressmen members to export the worst of American fundamentalism abroad using quasi-governmental auspices.

These are the folks that the evangelicals and others have been in bed with for years at the National Prayer Breakfast.

Why?

It’s about access to power, stupid!

Should Homosexuals Face Execution?

It’s no secret that I love the BBC, I think it’s a wonderful national broadcaster, it’s quality is routinely high, the BBC news team’s reputation for being accurate, impartial, balanced is well known. It’s a trusted source of news all over the world. And, having been lucky enough to travel around this world on more than one occasion, I really can say that I regard the BBC as a true world class broadcaster, and one that I am so happy to pay my licence fee for.

However, sometimes they really don’t do themselves any favors ! Today, they posted an offensive question on their Have Your Say feature on the BBC News Website -

Should homosexuals face execution?

OK, which as one of those homosexuals was very alarming, I mean what are they going to ask next, – should blacks be shot? Should Jews be gassed? Should gingers face exclusion? Should Christians be stoned to death?

Yes the site then goes on to pose “Yes, we accept it is a stark and disturbing question. But this is the reality behind an Anti-Homosexuality Bill being debated on Friday by the Ugandan parliament which would see some homosexual offences punishable by death.” But that didn’t stop moral outrage being poured out via the blog sphere, witter, facebook and other gay UK lifestyle Mag Attitude.

Much of the condemnation and criticism was leveled at the corporation for posing such a question for debate, but there was also shock and revolt as some of the replies posted on the site by bigoted and prejudice readers -

Homosexuals should not be executed. But homosexuality should be recognised for what it is – a perversion of natural sexual relations. Instead in our Godless humanistic society it is almost now being given some sort of protected and elevated status.Homosexual marriage is a travesty and an abomination. As is homosexuals in leadership positions in the church. One sign of a decaying society is the legitimising and the widespread practice of homosexuality.One of the major reasons for the fall of Rome – The Rev .. Reading.

Bravo to the Ugandans for this wise decision, a bright step in eliminating this menace from your society. We hope other African nations will also follow your bold step.

God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Like already stated, homosexuality is considered a taboo in most parts of Africa, and that includes Uganda. What the Ugandan parliament is doing is to protect the traditional moral heritage of its people. This, even before parliament criminalised it, was considered a social crime. Can I move to Uganda? At least one country in the world is taking moral values seriously (as well as the health of their citizens). It may sound extreme, but that shock value will allow more people to think about their actions beforehand.

I fully endorse the legislation intended to protect the culture and traditions of Uganda. What we should understand that much as people have their rights, these rights should not be exercised at the detriment of the society in which we live.
Remember that Uganda (and by extension Africa) has a unique tradition which needs to be protected by the influences of Western culture which seem to corrupt the morals of our generation

Until several decades ago homosexual acts were illegal in the UK. Things are very different now. Understandably, there are many people with devout religious beliefs who continue to believe that homosexual acts are sinful. However to punish homosexuality with execution has to be an immensely greater sin and I am sure that people who pass and execute such extreme sentences will eventually be called to account for their actions.

Obviously not all of the the comments on the BBC’s site were as homophobic and as appalling as those I’ve highlighted here, some were very positive in their condemnation of not only the question, the Uganda laws that prompted the BBC team to thing this was a suitable question for debate, but also question statements made by other readers.

The BBC bowed to public complaint and changed the questions wording to Should Uganda debate Gay Execution, but the damage had already been done, offending many, outraging some and more crucially calling into question the BBC’s editoral judgement….

Pepsi Sponsoring Murder

In Uganda, where legislation is currently pending that would mandate execution for “aggravated homosexuality”: Anti-gay “murder music” singer Beenie Man performed in Kampala over the weekend.

“The King of Dancehall stuck a sword of words into gay people through singing and talking. “In my family, we don’t have any gay person but if you’re gay, my brother that’s not my fault,” he said as he performed his song Mi Nah Wallah, in which he says he would like to cut the throats of all gay men. George Bush and Bin Laden were also at the receiving end of the Jamaican’s wrath calling on the audience to say “murderer” as he sang about the pair’s warfare.”

The concert also featured a promotion by Toyota.

Stop Subsidizing Homophobia

Since its inception in 2003, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has become the largest public health program in history. Created by President George W. Bush, it has distributed nearly $50 billion worldwide, mostly in Africa, to prevent the spread of HIV and to treat its victims. Over the last five years, the fund has provided care for 3 million people and prevented an estimated 12 million new infections. Even Bush’s harshest critics do not deny that PEPFAR has been a huge success in combating the AIDS epidemic.

In spite of all that the program has accomplished, however, a persistent problem remains: the promotion of homophobia by African governments receiving American aid money. In no nation is this problem more acute than in Uganda, one of 15 PEPFAR “focus” countries that collectively account for half of the world’s HIV infections. Homosexuality is considered a taboo in most of Africa, yet few governments have gone to the lengths of Uganda’s in punishing it. The consequences are devastating not only for the people directly affected by these adverse policies but for the fight against AIDS in general.

Uganda’s campaign against homosexuality took a disturbing turn last month when a member of parliament in the nation’s governing majority introduced legislation that would stiffen penalties for actual or perceived homosexual activity, which is already illegal under Ugandan law. According to the proposed law, “repeat offenders” could be sentenced to death, as would anyone engaging in a same-sex relationship in which one of the members is under the age of 18 or HIV-positive. Gay-rights advocacy would be illegal, and citizens would be compelled to report suspected homosexuals or those “promoting” homosexuality to police; if they failed to do so within 24 hours, they could also be punished.

U.S. Evangelicals Killing Gay People in Africa

Hate never made for a good export. But that hasn’t stopped a prominent group of American evangelicals from trying to ship their anti-LGBT principles abroad. One glaring example of right-wing theology run amuck across the globe is fresh out of Uganda, where legislative efforts to attack Ugandan LGBT people reached fever pitch this week.

Uganda is an interesting example of how the radical religious right in the United States has sought to take their battle against all things related to homosexuality to a global level. Earlier this year, a prominent group of evangelicals — among them representatives from Exodus International and Defend the Family International — attended a conference in Uganda aimed at discussing ways to fight homosexuality. The goal of the conference was to brainstorm ways that the government, schools and churches in Uganda could “wipe out” homosexuality from the country.

Homophobia – A Global Crisis

Nowadays, in Uganda, sermons in mosque and church, Anglican and Catholic usually talk about homosexuality. We are painted stupid, ugly, bad, killer, un-african, evil, and all sorts of things. Anyone who defends us comes out as bad, simply because they have defended us. Why is this so? With Ssempa, I sincerely believe that the problem is repressed sexuality. From a lot of things that he says, it is quite clear that the guy has a problem with sex. From thinking that masturbation is evil (one of the worst), to abstinence campaigning and crowning homosexuality with evil. He is obsessed with homosexuality. Too obsessed for him to be free of it.
